Re: Is patient the king-

I start with the disclosure that I am not a medical or medical-related professional. I am an engineer with 35 years experience, but I am generally very concerned about health and safety of the society in general and about that of the disadvantaged sections in particular. I have had many interactions with medical doctors. I narrate a couple of them. Once a relative of mine was admitted to a maternity home after she developed labour pains (It was her first delivery). The doctor asked her: `would you like to take an epidural injection?'. The poor soul did not understand what it meant and with the

pain she was having, she was in no mental state to think and answer that question. She turned to her young husband who simply answered: `Please do whatever you think is good for the patient and the about-to-be-born child'. The patient and her husband had no information about this injection and its pros and cons. What answer did the doctor expect? Did the doctor want to make the patient feel like a queen or a king ? Did she (lady doctor) want to shift the responsibility of consequences of taking the epidural to the patient? Well, all is well that ends well; no epidural was taken; delivery was normal and everything was fine. In another instance, when I went to a doctor with abdominal pain, the doctor said I must go in for a scan. Then he asked:` would you like to go in for an ultrasound or for a CT scan?' I did

not understand the import of the question. Probably he wished to know whether I could afford the high cost of a CT scan, but he never mentioned that in clear terms. What answer did he expect from me? What information did I have to make a decision? I simply said: `I will do as you say'. I wonder whether the doctor should consider the consumer (the patient) as the queen or king. According to me, he or she should treat all patients as equal and do whatever is the best in the circumstances. He should do what he would have done if he himself were the patient. S. Dear Madam Kunda, The consumer is the king in the things he purchases. In contrast, medical profession is different. He could be a king if he is well informed of the latest in medicine, else he is left at the mercy of the doctors. If he takes the medicines of govt supply, not much to contribute to market economy except of the yearly health budget. But if treatment is on payment, the market could be large. The consumer awareness is increasing with more and more medical cases coming up in consumer courts. I was very much enlightened with Mr Gopal's contribution. hello all It is very interesting topic to discuss because through this we can come to know the exact status of consumer in such marketing monopoly. "king or victim" cant say exactly....Ideally thinking consumer should be king..but very few consumers are aware about drug prices . even most of them dont know that there is something like cheaper medicines. most of them think that expensive the drug, better is its effect.this concept is very deeply rooted in their mind.also they have tenacious of thing that "doctors are god" whatever they prescribe is like "prasad"..one has to eat that.consumers from remote places like from madhya pradesh, they dont understand even the hindi language properly..and how come we expect from them to understand about drugs.Ignorance is in well eduvated people..what to say about countryside..very bad situation. most important thing to solve this is to educate them about drug pricing. mannuals should be

circulated which should be written in vernacular language. As far as the current scenario is concerned, consumer is victim....victim of irrational prescribers....victim of marketing people...victim of iliteracy about drugs. there should be perfect balance between prescibers and consumers..Unbalanced situation will serve purpose thank god..netrum is there to make some awareness in consumers.. regards sarangkunda gharpure <gharpurekunda@...> wrote: Hello All, My earlier post was to stimulate you to think about the topic from a patient's point of view. Hi Gopal

Not all members of NetRUM are doctors. We appreciate your concern for

the rational issues and welcome your contribution.Keep networking if

you want the doctors to understand your point of view.We do not

assure to deliver much but are making a small effort to change the

existing scenerio.

I feel that in India the patient is no way closer to becoming a

King. Starved of medicine information, mostly taken for granted,

always bullied, usually exploited, always at receiving end and

absolutely powerless.

Right from the policy makers, drug regulators, pharmaceutical

industry, prescribing doctors, dispensing pharmacists - not many

show concern for the patients. While what is needed is patient

empowerment to make them the kings, they are paupers in medicine

related environs.

Dear Madam

A nice topic indeed. To me consumer has never been the king when it comes to being a patient. Actually indirectly the " consumer " is the prescriber since he decides which medicine the patient takes. And in that case he is the king.

I have a suggestion, if Dr Vijay agrees and if you think its OK..

Each of us invites five of our friends (non medical) who can opine in this forum. Lets have the opinion from the horses' mouth!

Greetings! Can we people not get more aggressive ? I don't mean any violence. More and more articles in the print press and more exposure to the topic in the television media ? Do you want me to file any application under RTI ? Please let me know.Last week I saw an interesting discussion programme on DD (National) in Hindi; the panelists were Dr. K. K. Agrawal (cardiologists association), chief of the medical council of Delhi, and an orthopaedic surgeon. It was a phone-in programme and many issues we raise here were raised in that debate as well. Please suggest like-minded people in Bangalore so that I can meet them and find out whether we can do something in this region. The situation is alarming.Sincerely,S. Gopal------------Vijay <drvijaythawani@...> wrote: Hi Gopal Not all members of NetRUM are
