The year 1959 , when OC pills were introduced in USA raised anxieties about moral decay and the eroding of traditional family values. .............but it changed the social and sexual landscape. It opened the door to a psychological mind-set of a life beyond having kids and being a housewife. Guest guest
Hi allWe urbanites tend to look at issues in a very sophisticated manner, applying problems and finding solutions in our context. The problems at grassroots and in rural areas are different and perhaps need more attention. The society still looks at a rape victim as " someone " who invited trouble, an unwed mother has to fend for a solution herself, sex workers are only lately learning to demand use of condoms to prevent HIV, gender selection and bias still exists...in such a scenario, EC provide some respite to the women. It is better to have these products officially and with proper awareness rather than using them in a clandestine manner. Lets not contest this. The magnitude of " misuse " will be small and pardonable compared to the comfort and freedom it gives to the woman. Sexual freedom is here to stay, sooner than later and the earlier we accept it and learn to deal with its consequences, the better it is for our society. It will give it a mature and healthy outlook and help both the genders. Guest guest
Hi, Is there a scientific basis for: medicines like "Select" which claims to change the gender of fetus in womb from female to male? Can it be legally sold as OTC? Use of EC can be allowed, but as only as a reserve drug (just like Mefloquine for Malaria): -When other methods of contraception have failed -to save pregnancy following rape -Information on side effects should be stated in vernacular language in bold letters on labels. -Adequate information about the medicine be given to girls 10 years and beyond in schools, mahila societies. -Anupama From: Vijay <drvijaythawani@ .co. in>Subject: EC as OTCnetrumgroups (DOT) comDate: Friday, 26 September, 2008, 7:24 PM Hi,- Let us not discriminate women. Guest guest
Hi, I had seen " Select " in a UP Govt handicraft shop " Gangotri " at Nagpur a couple of years back and then written to the managemnet that it was unethical to sell such product in a Govt. handicraft shop. Subsequently they withdrew it from Nagpur. Just check it in your city if they are still selling. Gangotri is a big chain and has outlets at most of the big cities. The product is manufactured by a company from UP. The discussion related to if EC should be avialbe as OTC. I have the courage of conviction to say emphatic " YES " . Guest guest
Dear Vijay sir, Appreciate your boldness for saying YES to EC being sold as OTC.You are right in saying that its women who become pregnant so they should have the right in using EC.Instead of debating over why EC is allowed as OTC by the government,I feel we should stress on how to improve awareness among rural women(most deprived section)in using EC'.I agree with Dr.Anupama that it should be available as OTC with adequete information regarding its ADRs. So sir i stand by you in saying a big " YES " Dr.Santosh In netrum , " Vijay " <drvijaythawani@...> wrote: > > Hi, > > I had seen " Select " in a UP Govt handicraft shop " Gangotri " at > Nagpur a couple of years back and then written to the managemnet > that it was unethical to sell such product in a Govt. handicraft > shop. Guest guest
hello, My opinion seems to be an echo of Mira Madam's. We all seem to agree that OCPs have brought in a welcome change in women's plight. They now have a decisive control on a very big issue relating their own body, hitherto not under her control. But what still needs to be done is that the message should trickle down to remote areas where the problems still persist. kunda . -- On Fri, 26/9/08, Mira Desai <desaimirak@...> wrote: From: Mira Desai <desaimirak@...>Subject: Re: EC as OTCnetrum Date: Friday, 26 September, 2008, 10:19 PM Hello all, The societal and religious pattern has traditionally kept women suppressed and bear the burden without raising her voice . Guest guest
Hi, As our discussion has come to an end , let me conclude with the following : We welcome and appreciate the OTC status of EC, which is in the best interest of the women to avoid unplanned pregnancy. The OTC status of EC is justified by timely treatment (within 72hrs.), self diagnosis, efficacy ,minimal side effects. However, adequate knowledge and general awarness about its appropriate use should be increased by involving pharmacist , nurses in health promotion programme. Using print and electronic media for education and awarness esp. local language will be more beneficial in rural areas. Establishing hotlines will be worth appreciating . A risk of being misused by teenagers has been a matter of concern for all the 100 countries where it has been introduced.Although the risk has been based on speculations, special attention should be given for sexual education in school health programme. Nurses, midwives can be useful resources for the sexual education programme. A sensible use will have great impact in long run in the society and women empowerment........ My special thanks to Drs.Vijay, Chetna, Bashaar, Yashashri, Anupama, Manoj,Santosh,Sreekanth and Fatai for their contribution and making the discussion interesting. Thank you all, With best wishes, Mira Desai (N.B. 'Select' has been withdrawn from the market and not available in Ahmedabad.)
