Hi

I am yet to get Dr Bharat's consent.

If he agrees then we leave all decisions in this regard, to him.

There should be unity of command in an issue.Only then can a mission

move with speed.

He, on his own can seek opinions of those whom he can contact with

ease.

If there are any suggestions in this regard please feel free.

Dear Dr. Anupama

Yours is also a good suggestion. On October 1, 1957, thalidomide was released as a sedative (under the name “Conterganâ€) and was sold as OTC (Because of the explicit claim of safety) first in Germany and later in other European countries. Yet, it is difficult to decide an exact date when thalidomide disaster first occurred. The story begins in the West German village of Stolberg in 1954, when Chemie Grunenthal, a small and relatively inexperienced pharmaceutical company, launched a search for a low-cost method to manufacture antibiotics from peptides. The company’s chief of chemical research heated a commercially available chemical named phthaloyisoglutamine and produced α-phthalimidoglutarimide, which the company labeled “thalidomideâ€. The new molecule was patented, and they began to ‘cast about for a disease that thalidomide could cure’. Early in 1955, with no scientific rationale and with no formal plan to monitor immediate results or to conduct a systematic follow-up, Grunenthal distributed free samples of the new drug to doctors in West Germany and Switzerland. Practically nothing was known about the drug at the time of its marketing. This new drug was first prescribed for the prevention of epileptic seizures; although no anticonvulsant effect was found, patients said they experienced “deep all-night ‘natural’ sleepâ€. These early anecdotal reports suggested that the drug was a “hypnotic, which directly induces sleepâ€. The haphazard “testing†continued and patients reported “soothing, calming and sleep-inducing effectsâ€. A few patients reported side effects, but these were not thought to be serious. In the town of Stolberg, on Christmas day in 1956, 10 months before thalidomide was placed on the market in Germany, a child was born without ears. The father, an employee of Chemie Grunenthal, had brought home samples of the new drug for his pregnant wife; years later, he learned that his daughter was the first living victim of the subsequent epidemic of thalidomide-induced infant deaths and malformations. --------------- Sales grew steadily, and by 1961, thalidomide was the best selling sedative in Germany ----5 times more than its leading competitor. In August 1958, Grunenthal wrote a letter to all German physicians declaring that “thalidomide was the best drug for pregnant and nursing mothersâ€. Distillers Company, a British Pharmaceutical firm, used the trade name “Distival†and added this claim to the drug’s label in Britain. Later thalidomide was marketed as “the drug of choice†for pregnant women with morning sickness and nausea. The later part of the story we all know better, -------------------

And let me just remind you folks that Thalidomide is again back on

the market both in the West and India for onclogic indications.

However, this is under strict Risk Management Plan and conditions,

which I doubt that the Indian companies do. For example Dabur

markets this drug, but as far as I know they do not have a proper PV

system and also a Risk Management Plan. Inspite of a strict Risk

Management Plan in the West there have been issues with that as well,

however, companies in India have said they never have any issues. In

fact the best place to live in the world is in India as there you do

not get any ADRs!!!

Dear Dr Rahman, The Thalidomide story is really interesting. Thanks Now that Dr Bharat Gajjar has accepted the offer of National convener for PV Day, we can suggest him the date. Never mind if Thalidomide tragedy has no particular day recorded, we can search and suggest some other suitable day.
