Guest guest
, My AFO is flat on the bottom and it comes all the way up the back of my leg and has a velcro strap. Mine is about 1 1/2 " below my knee with a velcro strap for me to secure it to my leg. It does not allow me to hyperextend which is what happens with CMT patients. Yes I also have footdrop. You've probably been hyperextending for a long time and it will take you awhile to get used to not being allowed to do that. When I take the AFO off, my left leg feels very rubbery when standing or trying to walk and that is an excellent indication to me at how much it is helping me. The most I wear the AFO is about 5hr/day. I also still have difficulty just standing still without swaying, but I do not have that sensation of feeling like I am going to collapse as long as I am wearing the AFO. The New Balance are an athletic shoe so no there is really not a heel per se. The SAS are one unit construction on the bottom as well. SAS does not have a website, but the customer service number for the corporation in San , TX is 1-800-800-1976. You will need to tell them that you wear AFOs and need to order wide width shoes. They should be able to send you a brochure for the women's shoes. They are not open on Sat./Sun. A website that I found for New Balance is www.joesnewbalanceoutlet.com I'm sure there are others. My orthotist told me that New Balance makes a rocker type bar inside one particular style of their shoes and that may help you walk better. I don't like the idea of an athletic shoe with my dress pants so I wear the SAS all the time. They are leather and come in Beige, White, Black, and Navy. Do a search for SAS shoes and you may find a store that carries them online with a picture so you can see what they look like. Hang in there, with determination you will get the hang of this!! Guest guest
, I wore those gel heel cups in my shoes for last 5 yrs. They helped me alot. When I had my AFOs made, I made sure they knew this and they made a small heel on the AFO itself. Mine work great for me, but I still put the gel heel cup inside the AFO as it helps as a shock absorber for my back. I also wear New Balance sneakers. I buy them 1 size larger and wider to accommodate the AFOs and I also keep the AFOs inside them, and just put the sneaker on. Hope this helps you! Take Care, Tina! :-)
