How many of these types of surgeries has the surgeon done, what the

success rate is, how long will he be in the hospital, will he wear a

brace or a body cast afterwards, how long before he can go back to

school, how will his pain be managed, will there be physical therapy

afterwards, what kind of instrumentation will they use (rods). Hope

this helps. I know it is scary. I had it done myself many years

ago. I was so grouchy before the srgery. I didn't realize how

stressed I was. Expect some emotional changes in your son with all

of this. Talking about it helps a bunch!!! I wish you all the best

of luck and much success.

I have had 3 children that have scoliosis surgery. One just anterior the

other two posterior and anterior, (front and back of the spine) I would ask

what kind of fusion he is having. If the front is involved he will be in ICU

for a day or two. Depending on the level, they may have to remove part of a

rib and will have a chest tube a few days. Ask if they will be hard ware,

(instruments) or not. Ask if they plan to use bone from the bone bank or his

own. If he is only have a posterior he most likely will just go to the floor

Will A back brace be fitted? There was no physical therapy for my kids they

all started getting up and around before they left the hospital and took

about 2 weeks to feel more or less normal. The only restrictions any of

them had were no gym classes, which none of them minded. Hope this helps a

little

My 15 yr old son is going in for scoliosis surgery on the 25th of this

month. This Tuesday, we meet with the surgeon to discuss the procedure.

I am wondering what questions we should be asking? Especially, what we

should be asking about his needs/care after he surgery. Can anyone who

has been through this themselves or with a child help?

My 19 year old son is having scoliosis surgery

(posterior) in early May and returning to college at

the end of August. He won't be going to ICU unless

something unforseen occurs. I am worried about things

like paralysis, infection, pneumonia and other

complications. He as far as I know is in good health.

He has always been sedentary but is not overweight

beyond maybe 10 pounds. Any suggestions or information

? Thanks. Gail

What kind of emotional changes? Were they permanent?

What do you suggest?

Things are so much better now then in my day. Pneumonia is quit uncommon

because they get them up and going so quickly. In my day. I was down flat

for 3 months bed pan and all. Now they are sitting on the edge of the bed

doing deep breathing on the second day. Paralysis is a very small risk

because they have such wonderful neuro technology now and the doctors can

ask to have a nerve stimulated and checked as they go. Infection was not a

problem for us. They are commonly given antibiotics in their IV for awhile.

The only thing the boys complain about was the catheter. They wanted it OUT!

Let me know how it goes.

They all had no gym for a year and then they could do everything but some

gymnastics because the back was just unable to bend in that area. But my boy

played football several years later. So if you are an athlete go for it. The

doctors just did not want any jarring until everything was very well healed

and sturdy. So ask at your 6 month visit and then at your one year.

Well in my humble opinion... I would recommend treating any back that

has undergone spinal fusion very gingerly for the rest of your life.

Some of us did the play hard and forget that we had spinal surgery

thing and ended up disabled at an early age from all kinds of issues

related to wear and tear on the spine. Is it worth it? I honestly can

say no. After spinal fusion it's not a normal spine and it never will be.

When I had the surgery I was told no gym - ever. That

was fine with me cause I didn't particularly like pe.

I had the surgery at age 11. Other than no pe, the dr

said no contact sports & no horseback riding. So I

spent plenty of time climbing trees & riding my bike.

Once I was an adult, I got into all kinds of physical

activities. They were quite varied & I did them all

with no problems. Granted, the surgery was in 1977, so

they are in a total different mindset about physical

activity now & the surgical methods have improved by

leaps & bounds.... ~Moonbeam

,

I do so love it when you chime in! Your have such

words of wisdom. Yes, all those years I was riding

roller coasters, dancing, & doing power aerobics and

marathons I thought I was doing just fine....now the

disc degeneration & pain have me very limited

physically. The thing is..I'd go to orthopedists, but

none of them were scoliosis-minded-so they didn't say

anything at all about curbing my activities. In fact,

they all said they didn't know why I was hurting &

'shouldn't be hurting.' ~Moonbeam

you feel like doing.
