Guest guest
i have a question about the smells > (doc, you are so funny!). are they that bad? bathroom visits dont > smell great in the first place but its worse?? omg- lol ================================ Yes the smell can be (is) WORSE...like burn the nose hair right out of your nose kinda worse...to me what is even worse than the smell is it just lingers and lingers....you might as well set an extra plate and give the odor a name because it is staying for dinner. About 3 months post-op I farted, my daught-in-law walked up behind me then ran from the room retching....literally. Bless her heart she kept apologizing to me because she didn't want me to feel bad. The good thing...time does help. It still lingers too long but the stink is in a more normal range. JO

Guest guest
Hmmm, I would suggest doing it now, I'm not sure what she wants to wait for! It should be done at least every year, and if he has never had it done, now is a great time to start. And anytime you see growth slowing or any of the DS 'symptoms' worsening, insist on retesting. A full check should include TSH, Free T3, Free T4, thyroid antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies, as autoimmune thyroid problems are common in our kids. Guest guest
Hi, I would not wait any longer. I believe the standards for DS health care suggest that they get tested at birth and at 6 months. When Will was 6 months, his doctor suggested Will wait until he was 12 months to be tested. We comprised, and had him tested at 8 months and his thyroid was elevated! He is hypothyroid. He had no symptoms really. The doctor was surprised. I say better safe than sorry! > About thyroid. Guest guest
According to “Health Care Guidelines for Individuals with Down Syndrome”,(which is the standard that many doctors go by) babies should have thyroid test at birth, at 6 months of age, 12 months of age, and yearly after that (unless, of course, there is evidence that the person has some thyroid problem or needs to have thyroid med dosage monitored, then the tests would be done more frequently) http://www.denison.edu/collaborations/dsq/health99.html Neonatal (Birth to one month) Lab and Consults: Chromosomal karyotype; genetic counseling; hematocrit or complete blood count to investigate plethora (polycythemia) or thrombo-cytopenia (possible myeloproliferative disorders); thyroid function test-check on results of state-mandated screening; evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist including echocardiogram (even in the absence of a murmur); reinforce the need for subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE) prophylaxis in susceptible children with cardiac disease; refer for auditory brainstem response (ABR) or otoacoustic emission (OAE) test to assess congenital sensorineural hearing at birth or by 3 months of age. Refer for a pediatric ophthalmological evaluation by six months of age for screening purposes. Refer immediately if there are any indications of nystagmus, strabismus or poor vision. If feeding difficulties are noted, consultation with feeding specialist (occupational therapist or lactation nurse) is advised. <snip> Infancy (1 - 12 months) Lab and Consults: Evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist including echocardiogram (if not done in newborn period): remember to consider progressive pulmonary hypertension in DS patients with a VSD or atrioventricular septal defect who are having little or no symptoms of heart failure in this age group. Auditory brainstem response test (ABR) by 3 months of age if not performed previously or if previous results are suspicious. Pediatric ophthalmology evaluation by six months of age (earlier if nystagmus, strabismus or indications of poor vision are present). Thyroid function test (TSH and T4), at 6 and 12 months of age. Evaluation by ENT specialist for recurrent otitis media as needed. <snip> Childhood (1 year to 12 years) Lab and Consults: Echocardiogram by a pediatric cardiologist if not done previously; Thyroid function test (TSH and T4) yearly; behavioral auditory testing every 6 months until 3 years of age, then yearly. Continue regular eye exams every year if normal, or more frequently as indicated. Between 3 years and 5 years of age, lateral cervical spine x-rays (neutral view, flexion and extension) to rule out atlanto-axial instability: have the radiologist measure the atlanto-dens distance and the neural canal width. X-rays should be performed at an institution accustomed to taking and reading these x-rays. Initial dental evaluation at two years of age with follow-ups every six months. At 2-3 years of age, screen for celiac disease with IgA antiendomysium antibodies, as well as total IgA. Administer Pneumococcal vaccine at 2 years of age. Guest guest
Dear , We received so much info. after Jack was born and had so many dr. visits that I read through everything and put it away. After a couple of months, I took out the med. info sheets and there was info from the American Academy of Pediatrics...it concurs with Kathy's info. Test for thyroid at birth, 6mos., 12mos. and yearly thereafter. We had it done. It was a little late for the 6mos. and we completely missed the one at birth. There are some blood tests, too. They check for leukemia and should be done on about the same time frame. We were able to do the blood work for both the same day. We have a wonderful pediatrician and Jack was in the NICU after birth for 11 days but, none of this work was done at birth. I think with so many children to care for at the hospital and by peds. that it was overlooked. (not intentionally) Anyway, it was a good reminder for me that I have to stay on top of his healthcare and ask for tests. I almost wish that I'd gone to med school--sure would help now. --Becky > > About thyroid. My new nurse coordinator (who has a daughter with DS) said that we could wait for thyroid tests. Guest guest
Mike, If your sons haven't been in the habit of helping it is going to be a little difficult to get them started helping you at their ages. But, there is no time like the present for them to start. It will not only help you but help prepare them for their futures. Your sons are definitely old enough to clean bathrooms and at least help with the laundry. If nothing else they are old enough to put their dishes in the dishwasher and there is no reason for them to not make their own beds and clean up any mess they may have created. I know it is hard to stop once you have started but try pacing yourself, stopping after half an hour and I am sure you will find that in the long run you will be able to set a lot more done and not hurt near as much. My daughter has her own apartment run by Easter Seals, she has 24 hour care and she loves her apartment. She is a gentle soul, sweet and sensitive, but I know of some of the other ones who have gotten violent in the past. This wasn't your fault, it's part of the job and it sometimes happens that some one gets hurt. It seems that they are always short of staff too, it takes special " angels " to work with them the way they need to be worked with. It takes understanding and lots of patience. So don't be hard on yourself and learn to slow down. I used to be so independent, I wanted to do it all myself but I had to get out of that when my back went out. I still find it hard to accept help from friends but now I let my hubby help when he can. And if he can't help then I let things alone until I feel like I can do them. Relax and enjoy your life, it's more important than dust and dirty dishes, lol! I'm glad you're enjoying your vacation, it sounds great! Take care and take it easy! Guest guest
HEY MIKE... MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU. I CAN REALLY UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM. WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I MARRIED...WE WERE MARRIED FOR ONLY 2 MONTHS AND THEN YET ANOTHER RSD HAPPENED. HE HAS BEEN MY ROCK. WE HAVE BEE MARRIED NOW FOR 7 YEARS...AND HE HAS BEEN BY MY SIDE AND MY BIGGEST AND LOUDEST CHEERLEADER...BUT I CAN SEE HOW EXHAUSTED HE IS...HE HAS TO WORK 2 JOBS TO KEEP THE HOUSE RUNNING AND SO WE DON'T LOSE OUR HOME! WE ARE BLESSED WITH OUR DAUGHTER, WHO IS 17 (FROM A PREVIOUS MARRIAGE...HE WAS NOT A GOOD MAN....AND LEFT ME DUE TO MY RSD AND ALL MY SURGERIES STATING HE WANTED A NORMAL LIFE...READ MY MIND ABOUT WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN TO HIM....LOL)..SHE DOES HELP OUT WITH THE HOUSEWORK IN A HUGE WAY...BUT I FEEL GUILTY ABOUT THAT TOO. SHE GOES TO SCHOOL, AND WORKS OUTSIDE THE HOME... I THINK THAT WE, PAIN PATIENTS, WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE PANGS OF GUILT FOR WHAT WE WANT TO DO TO HELP AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE FAMILY....BUT REALITY COMES AND BITES US IN THE BUTT....AND WE REALLY JUST HAVE TO LEARN TO ACCEPT THEIR LOVE AND HELP...EVNE THOUGH I IKNOW IT IS EASIER SAID THEN DONE...ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WORKED ALL DAY OUTSIDE THE HOME TO MAKE THE MONEY AND THEN HAVE TO COOK AND CLEAN UP BECAUSE WE JUST CAN'T DO IT. WHEN WE WERE ENGAGED AND FIRST MARRIED, EVEN THOUGH THE RSD IN OTHER PLACES WAS MODERATE, I WAS ABLE TO WORK...A GOOD JOB..A REGISTERED MEDICAL ASSISTANT..I LOVED IT...I HLEPD PEOPLE OF ALL AGES..BABIES, KIDS AND ADULTS...DREW BLOOD, GAVE ALL SHOTS, ALL TESTS AND PHONE WORK....NOW, EVEN THOUGH I AM ABLE TO COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY....IT IS NO WHERE NEAR THE SAME WITH ALL THE BONUSES ETC.... AS FOR WHAT DOROTHY SAID...SHE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...YOUR BOYS ARE OLD ENOUGH TO HELP OUT...AND THAT MIGHT EVEN LET THEM FEEL LIKE THEY ARE HELPING MOM AND DAD..AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT...OF COURSE AT FIRST THEY MAY NOT BE TOO HAPPY ABOUT IT...LOL I WISH YOU ALL THE PEACE OF MIND AND PAIN RELIEF THAT YOU CAN GET. YOU ARE TRULY AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS, MIKE. GOD BLESS YOU. HANG IN, KATHY **************Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. City's Best 2008. Guest guest
Hello again, Thank you so much for all your help --sorry about the 2002 thing, my husband sent me an email saying the same thing and I changed it [i hope]. I live in the UK and at the moment very expensive cherries are in the shops from the US and Greece, but someone said canned ones would work as well but dont know about that -- my son found some dried goyi berries [wolfberries] and I will look for dried cherries in the healthfood shops. This is just the next step in sliding into the ditch of taking meds....more and more side effects and weakening organs....this site is SO great, I had a major crisis in 1999 when my back went, I was propped up in a chair for 8 months because I couldnt lie down. I could, however, sit at the computer and that is when I found this site and it kept me going through that nightmare time. Recently I had to have an injection in my hip as I am scheduled for double hip replacement when I stop looking for ways to get out of it and am in so much pain I finally go. My blood pressure was 220/103 but there was no anaesthesia involved so they did the procedure anyway. After that I was so scared I did go on BP meds but only two and it is down to about 169/96. I get myself so worked up before I go I am jumping out of my skin when I get to the doc's. Being 100+ pounds overweight has not helped my situation and even though I know that wheat affects me physically, mentally, and spiritually even, I still binge on it and this binging has brought me to this sad state. Heavy duty pain like gout is the only thing that gets my attention but thanks to an article I read in a woman's magazine I think I am finally on top of that. Dumping avoids has meant I have lost about 18 pounds in the last 2 weeks, mostly just fluid retention from the wheat. Eating wheat makes me binge, fuels my depression and makes my weight spiral out of control. SO once again thank you for your help. I'll let you know how I get on with the BP. Have a great day.
