doctor named Dr. Moreno, he practices in Clearwater FL and I would highly

recomend him, If you would like to talk to me let me know and I will give you my

14 year old daughter school physical

My daughter had her school athletic physical last week

and was told by the nurse she had scoliosis of the

spine and to speak to her doctor about it.

We have spoken to our chiro and he has said this is

not uncommon but very treatable.

On reading the emails of this group, there seems to be

more to it and it appears as if the treatment will be

better done sooner than later.

I have spoken to a friend whose son practices

kinesiology and they highly recommended seeing him or

another kinesiologist saying she would not need a

brace or surgery as they work on the muscles.

Any advice would be appreciated. We live in Florida

(near Sarasota) if anybody knows of a good doctor for

this here I would be grateful for the info.

Thanks. Leigh Redding

Dear Leigh,

I highly recommend you take your daughter to a scoliosis doctor. I had

surgery late in life ( I was 37 for my first surgery and 40 for my last

surgery).

I too was diagnosed at 12 or 13. Had gone to a chiropractor during my teen

years and even in early adulthood. They never claimed to reduce or change

my curve however they did help with the pain associated with scoliosis. By

the time I had 2 kids and in my mid 30's I really progressed and no longer

could put off surgery.

Right now my 13-1/2 year old daughter is being treated for scoliosis. She

is currently wearing a brace and so far it seems to be working (thank God).

For peace of mind get her to a good scoliosis doctor. It may end up being

nothing or something that just needs watching.

Steve, I think that the place to take your daughter is to an orthopedic

surgeon who deals with scoliosis for an opinion. Your daughter definitely

needs to be watched, but not all scoliosis progresses and she may not need any

treatment. If her scoliosis does progress, she should be seen by a doctor who

specializes in scoliosis.

Leigh,

I would suggest getting an opinion from an ortheopaedic surgeon. A lot would

depend on the type of scoliosis, the severity of the curves, what type of

curve and any known cause (most are unknown). It is possible that she just

needs to be monitored, with possible stretching/strengthing exercises. Some

manage with maintenance treatments with a chiropractor that is knowledgeable

about scoliosis. Not all chiropractors, physical therapist or exercise

trainers are that knowledgeable in the field of scoliosis so I would take

the advise of the nurse and check with the doctor. Also be educated as

possible so that you and your daughter can take the best course of action

for her situation. Some other good sites are www.scoliosis-assoc.org ,

www.scoliosis.org and www.scoliosis-world.com to get you started. I'm sure

others have some other ones that they would recommend.

Hi Llweyn,

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps we had better see the chiro after all, he will

probably be able to advise of a good ortho.

Thanks again.

Hi Leigh...

Looks like everyone is giving you great advice. If you want to take

your daughter to a chiropractor or kinesiologist, it's your $. But,

you definitely should also take her to an orthopaedic scoliosis

specialist, to get a baseline read on your daughter's curves. You can

find a list of specialists here:

I agree with . Please take your daughter to an orthopaedic

practitioner specialising in scoliosis. Chiropractors and

kinesiologists will not solve this problem if it is serious.

Hola

I agree with , a Scoliosis specialist should see your daughter to confirm

what degree curves, if she needs treatment and of what kind etc, the list is

endless!

Take care and hope all goes welll

So glad you wrote. Your intuition to seek more information is correct and

this is the place. I don't want to diss your chiro or kinesiologist but they

are not the ones to evaluate this condition. Only an ortho doctor that

specializes in scoliosis can do this. (even a Phys Ed teacher may be wrong).

The

scoliosis doctor will xray the spine and they have there own way of evaluating

and measuring the xray. It is not the same as a chiro xray evaultion or meaure.

Scoli doctors are not eager to operate so don't worry. And even if surgery

would be necessary (and it is only is a small percentage of scoli cases) you'd

want to get a second opinion because they may have different surgery

techniques. But don't jump too far ahead and worry about that. The brace can

and

should only be used in some cases too. The danger of chiro, kinesiology, or

bracing where unnecessary is more than a waste of money, it's a waste of

valuable

time that is crucial of the progression of the curve IF that is the daughter's

case.

Please heed the advise of we patient's here and seek the kind of diagnosis

and treatment that can only give you the correct assessment of your daughter's

spine. Her age is ripe for scoliosis, but you must have the right profession

to determine that.

Keep in touch with us here. We are your best support group. We care

immensely. We were all 14 and you are in our parents shoes.

Hi ,

Thanks for the info. Looks like we will have to go the

conventional route, unfortunately. We don't have a lot

of faith in them. We don't have insurance, therefore

our dollars will have to spent wisely.

Thanks again.

Gee, that hasn't been my experience! Quite the opposite! That seems to be

their solution to everything. But I agree, get a second opinion, a third,

and talk to people who have grown up after the surgery.

Just my two cents.
