Guest guest
Des, I had a fusion to my pelvis five and a half years ago with Dr. Boachie in NYC. I previously had a Harrington Rod fusion from approx. T4 to L4 but the last two discs gave way and needed to be removed. Before the surgery I had tremendous burning down my leg when I stood or walked, so I really had to have the surgery. My quality of life was basically sitting or lying down. Now I have travelled and resumed my daily activities (like shopping, working, etc.). There have been some changes that I have had to adapt to, for example, I do not stand straight but lean slightly forward. If I want to stand straight, I have to bend one knee. I know when I walk I lean forward. I have no pain, but a slight discomfort that I really don't think about much anymore. This is mainly because I needed a second operation a week after the first because some hardware needed to be readjusted , something that was probably a fluke with me and no one else. Walking isn't as natural and comfortable for me as it was, but at least I can walk now, which I couldn't before. Perhaps if I exercised on the treadmill more I wouldn't feel the discomfort, but I'll admit I'm lazy about that. In summary, I'm extremely satisfied with my outcome because I have a life again, and I'm trying to enjoy it before this " warranty " runs out! " That is going to be my new motto. I know exactly how you feel. I had 13 good years between revisions; hopefully I'll have a lot more than that this time. Here's to a hopeful 2004!
