Guest guest
My daughter's doctor told me specifically once she has a spinal fusion, she is not to be touched by a chiropractor. Her spine is fused, thus a chiropractor cannot adjust it - and if a chiro was to manipulate a fused spine, it could cause her rods and back severe damage. That is just what I was told - I know that doctors have a love-hate relationship with Chirpractors, but... Has anyone been advised differently? I would love to know other's opinions/experiences with regard to the issue. Thanks... From: beckybugkins <beckybugkins@...> Subject: Chiropractics and Truth? Guest guest
The few different orthopedics I have had care from have varying degrees of opinions- mostly they strongly recommend not to be adjusted, and never to be adjusted in the cervical, and never ever be adjusted if you have spurs-that being said, they all agree that chiro's offer other therapies these days other then adjustment. Therapies that do not include adjustment can temporarily reduce pain, but most of the orthopedics all have told me that chiropractors really cannot cure most issues. On the other hand, I do have friends that have swear by their chiropractors-all though most of them do not have many spinal issues beyond muscular- My experiences are about equal to a really good massage- when I stick to deep tissue at least once a week it seems to keep my pain levels reduced-for me a massage takes less time and I like the spa environment better- Diane From: beckybugkins <beckybugkins> Subject: Chiropractics and Truth? Guest guest
Hi Amy, I had scoliosis surgery with Harrington Rods and fusion from T-2 toL-4 at age 13. In my thirties, I began having pain above and below the fusion sites. This is not uncommon for people like us. Our discs that aren't fused have to take on the work of all of the fused discs. Anyway.....to answer your question about chiropractic care.....I have been seeing a great chiropractor for years. I did some research and found one that practiced deep tissue work. He never " manipulated " or otherwise tried to move the part of my spine that was fused, but he did work with the lumbar and cervical areas above and below the fusion site. My unfused areas continued to try to curve and he helped keep me away from further surgery for many years. In the end, I did have to undergo a revision surgery that continued my fusion down nto my sacrum and most recently had 3 artificial discs put in my neck....but I think I will/should create a new thread or topic for that subject. Unfortunately, my chiropractor has recently retired....and there isn't anyone in my area that can take his place. I am switching to deep tissue massage and it is also beneficial. You are right about the love-hate relationship between drs. and chiro. You have to do your own research and find what works for you. If it were me, I would seek out the help of a good chiropractor and make sure he or she has copies of your daughters x-rays or mri's. Unless your daughters spine is completely fused, from C-1 all the way to her sacrum, I suspect that good chiro care would compliment traditional medicine or surgery. Guest guest
Hi all! It was the same for me with chiros. They said to never go to one, ever. Plus, even before I had the fusion, chiros always scared me. Moving and cracking stuff. A friend of ours actually had a stroke about 3 years ago from a chiro cracking his neck and doing damage. They scare me and having rods, screws, fusion, etc. they scare me even more! But, that's just my opinion and I would definitely ask a doctor. Hope this helps instead of scares. > > > From: beckybugkins <beckybugkins@...> > Subject: Chiropractics and Truth? > Scoliosis Treatment > Date: Tuesday, January 6, 2009, 9:37 PM > > > > > > > A chripractor swears he can work on me 3 times a week and I won't need > the Spinal Stenosis Surgery. Guest guest
Been there, done that. Many times, I hate to say. When you're in pain, you want to believe. So I spent mucho money on so many promises that I'd " be fixed " . The surgery was the closest I came to being " fixed " , but I'm back in pain again, for a number of reasons, so, I'd say, baloney to the chiropractor. I went to one for years for maintenance, which did help, but he never told me he'd make me all better. That's the key. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. ________________________________ From: beckybugkins <beckybugkins@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Tuesday, January 6, 2009 8:37:58 PM Subject: Chiropractics and Truth?
