Guest guest
I agree, he should have done a little further research on the subject, (jmo) he is clearly not educated on all of the issues that go along with achalasia!! I do hope he educates himself and doesn’t tell someone that they can be “cured”. If that were the case there wouldn’t be much reason for this board now would there? Sent: Friday, September 29, 2006 3:19 PM achalasia Subject: The " C " word No, I'm not going to be talking about Cancer. You will recall a couple of weeks ago a rather heated discussion took place on this Board as to what Achalasia is. A disease, a disorder, a malfunction, a condition, or whatever. I'm not going to revisit that discussion. With Kia's insides being shown to the outside world, on TV, I googled to see if there were any references to it. I came upon an article published in December 2005 which really infuriated me (I guess it doesn't take much to do so). BBC - Health - Ask the doctor - Achalasia Dr. Rob Hicks was responding to a question about achalasia, and concluded his response by saying the following. The emphasized word in red was by me, and is the " C " word. " Performing an operation where the muscle is surgically cut to prevent further obstruction can cure most cases of achalasia. This operation is called a myotomy. " Now, either he has a different definition for " cure " or he did not know what he was talking about. A " cure " to achalasia to me would be the restoring peristaltic motion in the esophagus and an LES that opens and shuts when it is supposed to. I am not aware of any such operation that can do that, nor is Dr. Rob. I don't think anyone on this Board has ever considered themselves " cured. " My point in presenting this is that many of us, at one point in time, took it for granted that doctors knew what they were talking about. The above quote can be very misleading, causing a person to think that they can have a myotomy, be cured, then never have to worry again about achalasia. We all know otherwise. In his defense, maybe Dr. Hicks could not think of a more appropriate word to use, but he should have.
Guest guest
I'm in complete agreement, and I sent them a complaint via their website's complaints page to that effect. I wrote:--------------------------------------------The doctor who wrote this answer and the doctor who "reviewed" it last year are both uneducated in what achalasia is. The description of what achalasia consists of is woefully inadequate, and the treatment of surgical myotomy being described as a "cure" is absolutely false. Achalasia cannot be cured. The symptoms can be reduced in most cases, but the proper functioning of the esophagus and sphincter muscle cannot be reinstated as of the year 2006. If you are going to include medical information, even general medical information, you have an obligation to your audience to include ACCURATE and COMPLETE information to your readers. A simple "google" search can provide you with dozens (if not hundreds) of better answers than the one provided by your "medical personnel" on the website. -------------------------------------------- I doubt that they'll actually do anything about it with just one complaint, but at least I felt better after hitting "submit"! If anyone wants to join the cause, go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/make_complaint_step1.shtml and click "make an official complaint" and follow the prompts.Debbi in Michigan PS -- I also feel like posting another complaint on the BBC website telling them that "N. America" is NOT a country, it is a continent!!!! ;o)

Guest guest
I know we have been quite a few new people here and I just wanted to gently remind everyone know that we don't discuss chiropractors here and what they do or don't do. This group is for the discussion of established medical options like surgery. This was established when the group was formed quite a few years ago and it's kept the conflicts out. So lets just keep it that way and try to refrain from using the C word. Sorry for the somewhat terse message... I am in severe pain again and it's hurts just to sit.
