Guest guest
Dear ers, In the summer of 2002 I had posted a message regarding a new drug called Neotrofin currently tested on patients with chemotherapy- induced peripheral neuropathy. The drug is in Phase II trials. I thought it would be worthwhile if I inquired about the relevance of this drug to our neuropathy and this is the response I got from MDA, Dr. Shy: " Thanks for taking the time to write MDA. MDA ASK THE EXPERTS RESPONSE SUBJ: NEOTROFIN Could the new drug Neotrofin, which is currently tested on patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, also have relevance to future treatments available for other peripheral neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)? REPLY from MDA: E. Shy, M.D., Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI To the best of my knowledge Neotrofin has demonstrated an ability to induce expression of neurotrophic growth factors in the central nervous system. I am personally unaware of any effects on the expression of these growth factors in the peripheral nervous system following Neotrofin and am unaware of the studies involving chemotherapy-induced neuropathies. If the drug should prove effective in treating these chemotherapy-induced neuropathies, it would seem reasonable to investigate it in inherited neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), but at present this seems a little premature. " Best regards to all THEODORE
