Guest guest
Hi , I broke (shattered) my ankle in a motorcycle accident back in 1985. My doctor was thinking that I needed a fusion, but decided to reconstruct it with plates and screws. He told me that the ankle is a difficult joint to repair and to fuse due to its extreme weight-bearing abilities. It has a small surface area (much less than the knee) yet can easily support your entire body weight. It took three months in a non-walking cast and 1.5 months in a walking cast to heal. The doctor seemed to think this was a fast recovery. He took x-rays every two weeks. I had some of the screws removed last year when I had a tendon transfer surgery. Hang in there!
