My name is and I am 32 years old. I have an S curve, lumbar

60 degrees, thoracic is around 30-35. The lumbar curve is extremely

visible from the back view. I was in a back brack for 3 years during

highschool and college, which helped during my growth spurt. Since

reaching skeletal maturity, my spine has continued to curve and just

doesn't seem to want to stop.

Of course every orthopaedic surgeon tells me I should have had

surgery yesterday, but I still am in the process of seeking other

opinions. I do have lots of discomfort, but swim and do pilates to

help with posture and build up the abdominal muscles.

As I recently got married, child planning is an issue. I went to a

specialist who did tell me that I am able to carry to full-term with

no risk to the baby. However, I could endure more discomfort and

possible permanant neurological damage (numbing, pain due to

pinched/compressed nerves). I already have less sensation in my left

hip. The risks of surgery are also complicated. I know they have to

collapse a lung, etc, plus I know there is reduced mobility after

surgery restricting various bending/twisting movements. My surgery

would most likely take a long time b/c I have rotation of the

vertebrae as well as curvature.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there who is either in a

similar dilemma or has had the surgery and then a baby. I definitely

need some feedback about the after effects of surgery. I have talked

to several people already, but it cannot hurt to seek out more! Any

feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I am 43 and have curves of 55 and 60 degrees. I have not had surgery. I had

my first child when I was 34 and though I had some nasty back labor with

that delivery, I wouldn't say that it was unbearable. With my second

pregnancy I had no back pain during labor. I did have significant pain after

my children were born. For me, carrying my children around when they were

infants/toddlers caused serious back pain. I went through several rounds of

physical therapy to help me through that time. My pain has diminished since

then.

I have a co-worker who had surgery (90 degree C curve) at the age of 32. She

is a runner, was in excellent physical health when she had the surgery, and

her recovery was smooth. She had her first baby a little more than a year

after that. I'm not sure that everyone could do that. It's probably wise to

get input from at least one doctor as to what is best for your particular

situation. Good luck.
