" Hi. I've had scoliosis since the age of 14 (at least). Now I'm 52

and am looking at surgery because my curves have increased by 5% this

year. They are at 70% (thoracic)and another one at about 44 (also

thoracic). I have four curves. X-rays show that the top most and

bottom most will straignten out with the two large middle ones are

corrected. The MD has recommended titanium rods, hooks and screws, by

posterior surgery. I also have severe asthma and COPD.

I would like to know what other patients have experienced. "

Hi Lana:

Have you been seen by a pulmonologist? If not, since you've indicated you

have COPD and Asthma, I definitely would make an appointment with one,

especially one who works with your scoli surgeon. You will also need to have

PFT's and other tests done.

I have a severe C curve and was hoping to undergo revision surgery. I

consulted with a scoli spec. who sent me first to my own pulmonologist and

then to one with whom he works. He convinced me that in my case it would be

too dangerous to undergo the surgery. I would have to be put on a ventilator

and may never come off of it, just for starters.

Make sure you cover all your bases. Your curves are not as severe as mine

and perhaps your respiratory problems are not as bad as mine, but please make

sure you do all your research. Good luck. Feel free to write to me with

any questions.

Michele
