I've posted before about my recent revision surgery that included fusing me to

my sacrum. That was back on Feb 4. Since that time I've been suffering with pain

in my right side, up by my sacroiliac. Only way I don't have pain is if I spend

most of my time lying in bed. Otherwise I take ocycontin. I thought that it

wasn't right, because other than that one area, I feel all better. And only when

I start moving, walking, whatever, does the pain start. So on June 2 I saw my

xray and I have this really long screw, only on the right side, running right

next to my illeum. When I didn't take any meds and went for a walk yesterday,

just to see what my full amount of pain is, after 20 minutes I had such pain I

was up most of the night even after I took medication. I feel prickly in various

parts of my body which says to me that screw must be hitting nerves. My surgeon,

who is in Phoenix, 6 hours from here, looked at the xray and said he doesn't see

anything wrong

and can't do anything without me coming in for an appointment. I said I just

want the screw removed without all the traveling and expense, etc. Of course I

don't have this option.

I'm just wondering, has anyone who is fused to the sacrum seen their xray and

remember anything about the screw placement? I know he said he placed this screw

differently because I'm thin and he didn't want it protruding. But now I'm not

knowing what to do. Go back to my original surgeon in Wisconsin? Go to the

Baylor Scoliosis Institute in Texas? Live in pain and on pills? Has anyone ever

had this issue after surgery?

I had revision surgery last year in May. I was also fused to the sacrum. I

have two long screws - one into each hip. Fortunately I have not had any

problems but there are several that have had revision surgery that later had

to have the screws into the pelvis removed due to pain. You need to be sure

your fusion mass is solid before having the screw removed though. You will

probably need to go back to your surgeon for removal.

Thank you so much for responding. I wish I could figure out how to attach the

xray I have, but the screw that bothers me is so strange bc it's only on one

side. I have 2 that go into the top part of my pelvis, and then this long one

that goes down the right side by my illium. Have you seen your xray to know if

this is something out of the ordinary? I'm glad to hear, though, that I'm not

alone in this type of issue. I wonder if that means I'll have to wait a full 2

years to have it removed. That would suck.

Are you saying that you have one screw on one side and two on the other

side? I just have one on each side. I've not heard of anyone with a third

screw. Those that have had them removed have had to wait at least 6 months,

sometimes a year for removal.

Yes, basically that's how it is. I have two that go into the sacrum and one that

runs down my right side, way down. I finally was able to speak with both of my

surgeons and the word is I can have that screw removed after a full 9 months. So

about 5 more to go. I guess it was put in for reinforcement since I didn't fuse

last time. And apparently this causes discomfort more often in thin people and

removal is not a big deal. In the meantime I can get a cortisone injection. I'm

just so relieved! I'm not used to something having to do with my back turning

out to be simple.
