Re: Getting bars removed?

I had it done, they thought it was causing pain. Turns out that the

hardware was holding together a non-fused section, and when that was

removed, I was in terrible pain and bent over.

Back I went for the latest hardware, and to refuse the section.

I still have chronic back pain.

I don't think having the hardware removed removes most pain, just my opionion.

Hi,

Contrary to , I believev the hardware can cause some of the chronic

back pain we all experience. I wish my doctor had offered me a removal

option but he did not and now too much bone has grown over the rods to make

it possible so i live with the pain. My opinion do it if you can!

I too had painful hardware after my first surgery. The doctor went in and

cut just the top portion of the rod where my pain was and within 8 weeks, the

whole thoracic part of my fusion fractured. Had to have total revision

surgery done. I have no pain now with the hardware. I agree with , I

think

if there is pain that might mean there is nonfused area somewhere. And they

can't tell. My first surgeon told me that when he went in to cut the

hardward down, my fusion looked solid. Surprise, it wasn't.

Just a thought.

Everyone's situation is different. My ortho told me that even though

the HW manufacturer recommended removing the HW, he did not. He also

mentioned that recovery from removing them would take about as long as

when putting them in. Since it took me seven months before I went

back to work (and I wasn't having any problems with the HW, at least

so far), it was a no-brainer to leave them in. Its been three years

since the 2nd fusion. I'm really nowhere near ready mentally to go

through another major surgery, even if it is only to remove HW. If I

need to remove them in the future, well, I'll cross that bridge when I

come to it.

Thank you to all that reply.I think I will live with the hardware for

awaile. I really don't want to go through the surgery again. Thought I

wasn't going to make the first one.lol

How painful is that steroid injection - my son endured a disc o gram and is

plenty skeptical.

Hi Patty...

Hardware removal works well for some people. And, in most cases, it's

actually a fairly simple surgery with a fast recovery. Sometimes, a

steroid injected locally at the area of the pain can help the surgeon

diagnose if it's the implants that cause the pain.

Hi ...

I didn't find the injection painful at all.
