My original surgery I was fused from T4 to L4. I also had pseudoarthrosis

but had no broken rod. My surgeon, Dr. Boachie from NYC did both

anterior/posterior surgery and extended the fusion to T1. That was 6 years ago

and knock

on wood, I have had no problems since. Make sure you get a top notch

revision surgeon. You don't want to go through another surgery again. I did a

lot

of research before choosing Dr. Boachie.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you. That is a name I see again and again....thinking, therefore,

that he is the way to go. I too, will do anything to avoid more surgery. I

swear, I will go to any length to avoid it. I've had enough and am scared to

death of something going wrong. I have heard horror stories about botched

surgeries causing more problems than the person started with. I will keep his

name in mind and perhaps arrange to see him for his input. Ilive in New Jersey

and so NYC is easy for me. Thanks so much for your response and help. I

appreciate it deeply. Happy Easter!! Carol

Good luck with whatever you decide! If you do see Dr. Boachie, please let us

know what he advises. Being in SC, NYC is not easy for us, but worth it if I

have to have more done.

Happy Easter to all,

WOW! That is a very strong statement of support for this doctor if you are

so far away and would come to NY if you needed help....to see th is man. I

suppose I should consider myself truly blessed to be so close to someone whom

everyone seems to think is the best around. I will certainly let you know if

I end up speaking with him and good luck also to you ... good health.

I live out east on Long Island. It takes me about an hour and fifteen

minutes to an hour and a half, without traffic, to get to Dr. Boachie. I wrote

to

you before about him. He did my anterior/posterior revision surgery in

2000. Up until recently we would have to take my daughter every 6 weeks

because

he braced her for 2 years. He is the only person I would let touch my

daughter. Believe me there are doctors 5 minutes from my house claiming to be

scoliosis experts but that's where I went wrong with my first surgery and I

regret it. You never know, but I don't think I would have had any of those

problems had Dr. Boachie had done my initial surgery. I actually went to Miami

to

check out a doctor who was written up in Ladies Home Journal about my

revision surgery. He was suppose to be one of the tops in the country also.

He had

no personality and I was informed once he did the surgery I would not see

him again. He didn't really do rounds in a hospital. His own nurse gave me

Dr. Boachie's name and number. Imagine I almost had my surgery in Miami when

this angel was right here in NY.

Good luck.

Kathy

Hi Carol! I've been off line for several days....... I hope you and everyone

else had a great Easter weekend. Good luck with your attempt to find the answers

you need. I feel that we only have one shot at getting this spine stuff right

and I definitely would come to NY, or most anywhere, if the rest of my life

depends on one surgery and how well it's done.

My biggest road block right now is fear of the unknown. Then there's the cost

of the trip and all the followup trips as well. I try to tell myself that I'm

doing well enough to put it off a while. I go from being in too much pain to

consider making a trip of that magnitude, to doing better so I think I'm doing

too well to spend the money to come to NY for a new evaluation. I do think you

guys who are nearby Dr. Boachie's office are lucky ducks, if there is such a

thing as luck where scoliosis is involved.

Dr. Boachie was about to make one of the overseas trips talked about on the TV

special when I saw him. Thinking about what those children go through, and what

their families go through to see him makes me feel ridiculous saying it would be

a strain to spend the money to come to NYC. Last time we made the trip we stayed

in a nice little hotel a couple of blocks from Central Park. We took the

carriage ride, went to the museum, ate breakfast at a little cafe on the street-

that makes me ashamed to think about the difference in my trip and the trips for

the families in the third world country where the TV Documentary was filmed. I

have read about that show in the past but I haven't seen it. If anyone happens

to see it scheduled again I would sure like to plan to record it.

Thanks to everyone from this group for all the advice and support in this

process.

That's really telling- that the Miami doctor's nurse actually gave you Dr

Boachi's name and number! I live in a small community and worked at the local

hospital- it was so hard to know a person's outcome could be better if a

different doctor was seeing him or her. There were times when I went out on a

limb but I never knew if it might backfire on me- if the patient or his/her

family members got upset about something, they might say something that could've

cost me my job. Small town doctors are at times very attached to their status

and can't deal with anything said that questions their 'perfection'. Ah well-

there are a lot of great things about big hospitals and all the options they

offer!

Thanks!
