Guest guest
Hello My name is Troy and I have congenital stenosis scoliosis with Kypil feil syndrom and spina bifida. I've had more than 6 surgeries and wondered if I was a freak of nature or if any other guys have really bad scoliosis? (spelling may be wrong on any word in this post, LOL) I read quite a few of the post on here and most seen to be women. Let me kno, thanks Troy
Guest guest
Hi Troy, My son was diagnosed with scoliosis when he was 10. His curve was 40 degrees. He wore a brace for almost 4 years until last May when his curve increased to 55. He had to have spinal fusion in August. His doctor said in his 27 years of practice he has only had a " handful " of male scoliosis patients. He said it's pretty rare. My son just turned 15 and I pray all of the time that he doesn't have any future problems with this. The sad thing about all of this is that he has wanted to become a Marine since he was 5 and we don't have the heart to tell him yet that he probably won't be able to enlist because of all the hardware in his back. Anyway, Troy you're not a freak of nature!! How are you now? Have the surgeries been successful? Guest guest
My son also has scoliosis. It was discovered 2 years ago when he was 14. His curve was 42 degrees then. His is now 16 and the curve is 54 degrees. He is having surgery next summer. We were told that only 1 in 10 scoliosis patients are male. Best of luck to you! Guest guest
Troy, There are guys are on the various scoliosis lists so you're not alone. With a couple of exceptions, the males tend to be lurkers (readers rather than posters). I usually don't post unless I feel I can add things that others haven't already added. The women have so much to contribute and do it well so I don't feel the urge to post too often. And yes, females scoliosis patients outnumber the males so you should expect the messages from women to outnumber the messages from males. I don't know what you mean when you said " really bad scoliosis " . My upper curve was at 60 degrees when I had my first fusion. I don't consider myself a freak of nature and you shouldn't either. > > My son also has scoliosis. It was discovered 2 years ago when he was 14. > His curve was 42 degrees then. Guest guest
I'd also encourage your son to do whatever he wants and to at least apply for the marines. The worst case scenario is that they say thanks but no thanks and he goes to college or finds a job. When I graduated from college, I applied to go to Air Force Officer Training School. To help with the application, I got an evaluation from an orthopedic surgeon and had him write a letter which was included in my application. I was accepted, but by the time they accepted me, I was already working full time and decided to just keep my job. Today, I participate in marathons and am preparing for an ironman triathlon( 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run). The only thing I do special for my back is yoga(3 days/wk) and see a chiropractor and massage therapist about once every month or two. All 3 of those are also done to help with recovery from about 10 - 15 hours of exercise per week. This is all done with 2 40-45 degree curves in my back. The point I'm trying to make is that I would encourage your son to stay active(at least as active as his doc recommends) and don't rule out any possibility just because he has scoliosis. Good luck.
