I will try and find out from my mom why that was done and let you know.

Trish, Amber has a significant rib hump. Her surgeon said it could be fixed, but that she was much too young (17) at this time to consider it. Removing the ribs can cause the lungs to collapse eventually. She wears her hair long and that's that. I didn't even have to make a decision, because she said " no way. " I don't think she'll ever have it done, but the option is there. It just doesn't seem worth the risk. Sissi nitetrax@... Guest guest
, Just wondered how rare Chris's surgical complication was - after the lung collapse for anterior fusion he had a 'leak' and, as you may recall, needed a 2nd major surgery to remove 3 quarts of pasty fluid - they didn't even recognize that he had this problem until 4 weeks post op - in spite of his complaints of shortness of breath to his thoracic surgeon and his orthopedic surgeon - and the fact that after his scoliosis surgery there was considerable concern that he had an air pocket in his lung cavity. What do you think was really going on.......thanks,
Guest guest
Hi Trish and Sissi... Since I had never heard of a lung collapsing after the surgery, I asked Dr. Bradford, who does a lot of this type of surgery if that was a known complication. Here's his response: " removing the rib may temporarily cause the lung to " collapse " , but it is rapidly expanded at the time of closure with a chest tube that is removed in 1-2 days. it does not make a difference if the periosteum is removed nor if the patient is young. hope this helps. ( we do this procedure frequently and have had few problems " There are some doctors that do a lot of thoracoplasties. I don't think age makes a difference to them. Guest guest
Trish and Sissi, I had a rib (or maybe 2?) removed during surgery. My lung did collapse, and I had a chest tube for several days, but I am fine now - no problems with it.

How long were you down for, and was it done to improve your back and if so how much did it improve your back. I'm sorry to ask so many questions but I just want to know some view from actual people and what they went through not just what the doctor says, before I ok her to have this done. Any info would help. Thank you, Trish
