Guest guest
Sue, I recommend both you and your daughter go to a scoliosis specialist for a check-up. They are to proper doctors to know how to care for both of you. If you have not been to one in a long time, you should see if your curve has progressed. ===== Jeanette __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Sue... You might benefit from reading The Scoliosis Sourcebook by Neuwirth. It was published a few months ago, so the information is up-to-date. Regards,
Guest guest
Dear Sue, I have two children, one son, 35 and a daughter, 32. I am 59, was diagnosed at 13, had my first surgery in 1977 and revision surgery in 1997. My son has scoliosis and my daughter does not. True, it is much more prevalent in females, but male children should be followed just as closely. My son was diagnosed at 11 and wound up having surgery at 15 when his curve progressed from 18 degrees to 50 in three months. His is an unusual case, but I bring it up just to show the importance of watching male children as well as females. If my son's experience is the bad news then my daughter is the good news. She was diagnosed with scoli at about 13, and she was followed for years, but her curve never got above 12 degrees and when last x-rayed, it was 9 degrees. As far as I know, anything under 10 degrees is not even considered scoliosis, just a relatively normal back. I believe that at 12 degrees, all scoli specialists would just monitor your daughter's curve. It's important that you see a scoli specialist. www.srs.com is the site of the Scoliosis Research Society where you can find a list of scoli specialists in your area. Good luck. Guest guest
Yes, boys get scoliosis -= my son was diagnosed 2 months before turning 15 years old with a 40 degree thoracolumbar curve and a 28 degree compansatory curve - he had 2 different braces, TLSO and Providence, but it progressed and he had surgery 1/2001 - he had just turned 16 on Christmas Day - on his primary curve which is now 0, yes ZERO!!!! He has 4 screws and a 6+ inch titanuim rod - we are still watching his compansatory curve - he went from 42 to 22 on its own after the primary curve was straightened but has progressed to 30 now - next xray is 1 August as his doc is watching that upper compensatory curve quite closely - the only problem he currently has is shoulder blade pain. Guest guest
I find it interesting that your boy has pain in the shoulder blade area. I have had some manner of pain there since I was 11. In fact that lead to the diagnosis of scoliosis since the pain was quite severe at times. After three surgeries I still have the same darn pain in the shoulder blades. An orthopaedic surgeon called it bizzare once, not sure why. For me it is just a fact of life. However a neurologist told me that it could be caused due to a traction effect on the nerves in the opposite direction from the curvature. Seems logical to me.
