Subject: Re: Post Op Pain a wrote.... http://www.yogaforscoliosis.com/ Dear a and other familar with Elise Browning 's tape, I know Elise has not had scoliosis fusion. My question is-are the yoga tape moves/stretching safe for scoliomites who have long fusions or made for those with scoliosis and no fusion? Anyone know? Thanks, Jolene I attended a Yoga for Scoliosis workshop yesterday (Sunday) afternoon here in San Francisco with Elise Browning , who is the Yoga for Scoliosis instructor. I've read her articles for years and finally went to her workshop. She must be in her 50s-60s as she's been teaching Inyegar Yoga for over 25 years. She has an unfused thoracolumbar curve, and looks pretty damn good ... There were many yoga instructors there, a few young teenagers with moms, mostly fit, healthy women with minor curves I could barely see (so I knew nobody else would notice them!), and a handful like me with very visible curves. I was one of two with fusions. A couple of the older women (ie older than me, in their 50s - 60s, I'm late 40s) had unfused curves but no pain, they were physically active, and have been resisting the UCSF surgeon's advice to have fusions. We talked about this quite a bit ... I know Elise's postures, as with any yoga or other Eastern body discipline, like Tai Chi or Chi Kung, can be adapted to any body type or limitation. (This studio had another yoga class going on at the same time with morbidly obese women -- Big Beautiful Women -- which I thought was fantastic!) Yoga postures, especially when adapted for scoliosis curves (Elise understands spinal mechanics very well) help stretch and derotate tight tissues. But -- I doubt I could get the correct postures by myself, or just by watching the DVD. A knowledgeable instructor is needed, and this is the problem for people living in parts of the country without access to skilled yoga instructors, or who can't afford it. But yoga has become so popular in recent years I imagine most communities have at least one teacher, and she/he should be able to take the DVD and help clients do the moves properly. I can't afford Elise's private session fees, but I decided I should start taking yoga at my Berkeley YMCA. She does give workshops all over the country. I am very flexible, in spite of fusion and Harrington rod between T6 -L3, and could do the moves, to Elise's surprise. Felt wonderful afterwards .... One of her assistants, a young woman named Gabby, was in the Yoga for Scoliosis video, and has an unfused, visible, thoracolumbar curve. She is a Pilates instructor, which is what I've wanted to do for my own body, but it's prohibitively expensive. I might look into teacher training in order to learn how to use a reformer myself.
