Guest guest
, DPMN is a nervous system disorder that lies within the spinal canal at the motor neuron, and is not a peripheral nerve disorder, even though some of the symptoms are very much alike. My symptoms involve extremely weak legs and hands, balance problems, walking difficulties, etc. My illness is most closely compared to Lou Gerhig's Disease (ALS), but it is not fatal. My doctors stressed to me the importance of not becoming diabetic, staying thin, to avoid potential situations where I could fall, and to get to the doctor immediately upon any type of upper respiratory illness for antibiotics. So far, my pulmonary tests are very positive, and my bone density is good. I am 44 years old. My doctors also told me that I would definitely lose my ability to walk, but could not really give me a time frame. So, like all of you with CMT, I'm being stubborn and don't want to give in to my illness. My biggest challenge, I think, is to understand my limits and not overdo. Pushing too hard can make things worse - I find it hard to find the middle of the road. Thanks for caring -
