I like the Sweet n Lo brand hard candies. They have saccharine, not

Nutrasweet, and don't leave an aftertaste.

Nice! I *hate* the fact that summer clothes are going away, even though we

have 2 more months of hot weather ahead, but I *do* like those sales.

That is a great attitude to have. This is so much more than a 12

week program.

My only " secret to success " would be, don't quit. This program

works, if you work the program. Make it a habit. It takes 21 days

to form a habit, the first 21 days are going to be the most

difficult. Take it one meal at a time, one workout at a time. I

find that to be easier than looking at the whole 12 weeks, it just

seem too overwhelming for me.

Congratulations at taking the challenge for a new body. Stay strong!

Hey Jenni!

Welcome to the group and U CAN DO IT!

The only supplementing I do is with Myoplex Lite. I have at least 1 shake

per day as my last meal, and I add 1T of Flax Oil to it. I'll probably

switch to Udo's Oil after this Flax is out, though, from what I've been

reading in this message board about the benefits.

Other than that - just get accustomed to the eating style and the exercising

and worry about supplementing after the other is under control. Too much to

think about at first, I say. And too much stress on your body, too. It

took my digestive system about 2 weeks to get used to the new way of

eating - I haven't heard of anyone else talk about this here, but my stomach

was pretty upset during that first couple of weeks. Loose bowel movements,

bad gas - the works. But now that I'm used to eating BFL style, everytime

my free day comes and goes and I eat the " other " stuff (sweets, mostly),

that's when my stomach turns a flip.

So just take it one day at a time, and within about 5-6 weeks you'll start

to notice some changes I'll bet!

Good Luck

Hello, I am new and I just want to say that I really appreciate your

emails! I was on another group and some of them were die hards and

very vocal about sticking 100% to the plan. I am not saying being a

die hard is bad, I am just not there yet so I felt misunderstood. It

is a very big adjustment.

My stomach is a little messed up too.

Thanks - so sweet of you to say! I am definitely not a " diehard " , and

sometimes sneak a piece of licorice in the afternoons. I know that the only

one keeping me from whatever goals I may have is myself. Free " weekends "

aren't going to get me as lean as I'd like, but obviously I'm not ready to

make that total adjustment either. I'm not entered into any bodybuilding

contests right now, so nothing to worry about!

I have pics in the " justinsmom01031999 " folder if you're interested in

putting a face to a name... It took me a few weeks to feel comfortable

enough to do that, but I'm glad I did. Lots of encouraging photos in there.

Hope you can post some yourself soon!

Yeah, well, spaghetti I don't do with BFL normally. First challenge I did,

this challenge I'm not, especially after looking at the amount of carbs in

2oz of angel hair pasta - yikes! I actually just put on my grocery list to

look for lower carb pasta or wheat pasta. And when I ate it first challenge

I did so with some marjarine and parmesan cheese instead of sauce. But I

agree that if you eat a fist full of pasta with a little bit of sauce and a

protein and veggie that is a wonderful, healthy choice.

I was thinking about adding skim milk to my shakes because on this plan I

don't drink any milk at all. I used to love milk! And of course being a

woman we need our calcium...

Looks like we have a Sunshine, Becky, thing going on here. Nice to

share stuff with folks who have the same insight as yourself.

Talk to you all later..

<<So does anyone have any secrets to success they'd like to share.>>

I'm only in week 6 of my first challenge, so I haven't been ultimately

successful yet. But the best advice I've been given so far is " Don't give

up. " I got frustrated last week because I hadn't seen good results yet

(still really haven't seen anything wonderful) and the people at L & S really

gave me a pep talk and told me to hang in there no matter what.

<<Are you guys just eating clean and following the exercise program or are

you using supplements to help your progress?>>

I'm not using any supplements at all yet. I'm just following the eating

plan in the book and drinking my water and doing my workouts.

The protein bars don't seem to be a very good choice from what I've read

here and at L & S. Everyone seems to agree that real food is a superior

choice. I can't eat the bars, they taste like chocolate covered vitamin

pellets to me. Blech.

I can tell you that even though I haven't seen any great results on the

outside, I have tons more energy and feel really good. I'm sure the outside

results will come in time.

I tried some La Tortilla Factory whole wheat, low carb tortillas. They were

ok. They're sort of on the mushy side...maybe it's the lack of gluten or

something I don't know. They weren't great but they weren't terrible

either. Just so-so.

Ohhh, I'll definetly look for lower carb noodles. And tortillas, anyone

find any of those??

The Synergy Diet website carries their own brand, Adios Carbs...I found

them MUCH better in taste and texture than the La Tortilla Factory

brand. I still eat those because I can buy them locally, but I may put

in an order from Synergy soon...their tortillas really are worth it.

Hi Rabecca,

It is good to hear that already you are finding reasons why Micah has been

having trouble and that there are ways of helping her to overcome the

problems (even if it is expensive!). It does make you wonder how many

children might have these difficulties which are not picked up because they

are never thoroughly tested.

Good luck with your school meeting today.

Good luck with the school! I'm glad you learned something at the eye appt., even though it wasn't what you were expecting. I've learned, in my limited time dealing with anything like this, that you are so right in that catching things early is the key.

Let us know how it goes!

[Norton AntiSpam] Day 1

Hiya guys,

Okay, for those of you who have been wonderfully supporting me through the saga of getting help for my youngest, the only one we thought would be “normal” out of my group of mostly “chosen” kiddos… Anyway, the testing and appointments started this week. We have 5 appointments set up over a course of 4 days, and then will have another 5 evaluation sessions set up between now and the end of the month plus some therapy (I’ll go into that more later)

Anyway, today was our first appointment at the developmental eye specialist. The appointment was to be a basic eye screen with a bit more thrown in to see if Micah possibly had any eye function problems that were contributing to her educational difficulties. It was amazing how quickly we went past “normal eye exam” to “lets narrow this down”. By the end of the appointment, Micah was diagnosed with Saccadic Deficiencies, Convergence Insufficiencies, and Binocular Dysfunction. Before we left, we set up another appointment for Wednesday that will show us how severe each of these things and make corrective plans. The best news is that this doesn’t have to be permanent. Though it won’t go away on its own, it can be treated through eye therapy. By having weekly therapy once a week for 3 months to 2 years (depending upon the severity) and by doing eye homework 30 minutes a night/7 days a week (they let us borrow and bring the equipment home free of charge), she can overcome these obstacles. Her eyes can be trained to work together, to focus, to follow, and her mind to correctly interpret what she is seeing. The only down side is that it is all out of pocket. Insurance doesn’t pay for any of it, even though they agree it is “medically necessary”.

Tomorrow, we go to the team meeting at school, where they are all set to tell us that they need to go directly through the doctors (not true according to the doctors or the law) and where they want to assure us that it is just an attention problem that can be corrected by medicating and immaturity. We have let them know that we will be going to our pediatrician on Wednesday, and to a psychologist that specializes in dx learning and attention disorders in children on Thursday. They will find out then that the eye doctor will come again on Wednesday and then weekly thereafter and the psychologist wants her in for complete testing at least 4 more times before the end of the month. What should be good news for them is that any emotional/social/learning/attention/sight problems will be dx’d by the end of the month and therapy for at least the eye problems will be well on its way by then. Yet, you never know how a school is going to react to parents being proactive. This school is so used to complaining to parents without any intervention that it seems to have totally caught them off guard that we are moving forward now rather than waiting to see if the troubles persist or get worse. Now that we are acting, they want to assure us that she can do what they ask if she just pays attention more, tries harder, gets a little extra assistance (10-15 minutes a day) on subjects, etc… Haven’t we all heard that before with our AS kiddos? That is why Tyler wasn’t dx’d until he was 9 ½. They insisted that he could do it if he wanted, if he paid attention, if he just took his time. They were so sure that since he was so smart in other areas, that he would catch up in others… Well, he didn’t, and it would have been much easier to deal with earlier on!!! I won’t make the same mistake twice!!! Though it will be a financial strain, Micah gets her treatment now… not years down the road after she has given up on those things that have been so stressful and overwhelming that she burned out rather than learning to overcome… I won’t let her go through what Tyler did…

Anyway, give me luck tomorrow! I will keep you updated!!!

I was

thinking that too… How many wouldn’t have spent the funds or have a card to put

it on? How many teachers just assume that the child isn’t paying attention or

is an underachiever? How many would blame it on background, adoption, parents,

position in the family, etc? We will continue through the rest of the testing

just to make sure it is the only problem… Only a couple more hours before I

meet with the school… Give me luck!

Talk about sore muscles...I've been doing barbell lunges.....OMG,

talk about sore. My butt muscles hurt so bad I almost couldn't sit

down on the toilet LOL. I am in no way kidding here. It took a

couple days for the soreness to decrease some, but it's worth it :)

I'm positive you'll be running the 10k again in no time, stay with

it, and good luck.

Sounds great . It would drive me crazy to try to read all my e-mail

on my cell phone.

We really do need to care for ourselves. We usually are way too hard on

ourselves and would never treat anyone else the way we treat ourselves.

Ann,

Thank you for commenting on my post. You are so right. We, especially women, tend to put so many people ahead of ourselves and forget to take time to care and do things to make us happy and content. We care for our children, significant other, family, friends, co-workers, and even stranger far more than we do ourselves. So I'm committed to do something solely for myself each and every day. We should all strive to do so. We all need and deserve our "ME" time.

Take care all!

her show is similar to that on fittv. she has two ppl doing high impact/intensity she does moderate and two ppl doing low impact. she can be tough, some shows she is a little easy but mostly she presents a challenge without going to high. but that is just me.

She's definitely tough when you haven't moved in 9 months!

Actually she's not that bad. She used to have a tv show in the late 80's/early 90's (yeah, I'm old!) that was great because you'd have 3 different people workign out at different levels of difficulty. I think it was called Body Tech...kvetro60@... wrote:

> I saw the weight loss doc yesterday. Nice guy.

Congrats! A good doc is hard to find.

>He wants me to eat 1800 calories per day

You already know that you *do* lose weight eating this amount. You lost on

2000, if I remember right.

> He wants me to exercise 4 days per week.

With the girls back in school this should be do-able, unless you do finally

get a teaching job. Then you'll either have to wake up early or go to bed

later to get it done, cuz all 3 of you will probably have homework after

school/dinner, as well as your other usual activities & club meetings.

> He wants me to get a sleep study for sleep apnea.

My doc wanted me to have this done, too. But . . .

> if insurance pays for it

Mine doesn't, and no amount of doctor recommendations or appeals will get

them to change their mind. It costs about $2500 (give or take a few hundred,

depending on where you go) and you'll need at least 2 - the initial one that

will most likely diagnose a sleeping disorder that requires the CPAP or

Bi-PAP machine, and a second (or more) to get the machine regulated to your

personal settings.

The funny thing is, our Blue Cross plan *will* cover the *machine* in full,

but only if sleep studies are done and only for certain diagnoses or for

apnea within certain levels. Stopping breathing 10 times (or whatever) an

hour they won't cover, but 100 times they do.

>Dunno how you'd sleep with that thing.

I've read on the sleep apena lists that there are so many different types of

nasal tubings that it takes some trial and error to find one that works for

you. And the noise of the machine is something else to consider. Some are as

quiet as a whisper, others hiss or make other popping or clicking noises. If

you *do* wind up going and getting a machine, be sure to ask the respiratory

therapist or the doctor to make sure it has a humidifier on it - I've read

it makes a world of difference, especially if you have any kind of sinus

condition to begin with.

> He says that when

My levels have *always* been low-norm, but my doc refuses to treat it until

they goes below normal levels. He wouldn't even consider trying a low-dose

of thyroid to see if it gives my metabolism a boost to kick off weight loss.

> A doc who treated me like an intelligent human being! What a concept!

:)

> He agreed that Sugar Busters isn't the plan for someone that doesn't have

BUT the official Sugar Busters program itself *is* calorie-limited, as long

as you follow the rule that you only eat what fits on your plate without the

food creeping up the sides and no second helpings. You already knew about

the whole grains/no sugar aspect of, and I remember you said that was *all*

you were going to change about your eating at the time you did it, that you

weren't going to bother with the portion restrictions right then.

He also totally understood that staying on a

> plan long term is very, very, very difficult.

Duh! It's human nature to rebel against restrictions. They always lead to

binge eating sooner or later.

> Ok. Now my job is to stick to 1800 calories per day and walk on the

> treadmill.

You've done it before, you can do it again.

> This is it. Last chance. I either do it or I end up on the

> operating table with my guts changed forever.

And then stick with an even lower calorie diet and still have to exercise

the same 4 days a week. The only difference is, if you eat more than that

you'll rapidly get rid of it the same way it went in, " reverse feeding, " or

whatever euphemism you want to use.

I think meeting with the doc

> every month will help.

Is there a local weight loss support group you can also join, like T.O.P.S.,

Overeaters Anonymous (you can tune out the religiousness of it) or even

Weight Watchers? Maybe you need that group support instead of doing it on

your own.

> I'm going to put beef stew in the

That's why a lot of people stop using the Foodmover or Point type programs

if they eat a lot of casseroles & stews - it's so hard to figure out exactly

what you ate. Eyeballing each component will just give you a rough estimate,

but don't forget to also add the gravy and any toppings.

> Schlitterbahn was so much fun.

Isn't that what my GYN called mid-cycle spotting? Oh, that was mezzelsmertz.

Nevermind. ;^)

> I'm a huge, useless glob of fat who shouldn't take up space on the planet!

Ann, you are one of the most independent, hard working women I know!

Who else do you know can BUILD, from scratch, a bedroom set, or re-wire a

room? Add to that all the activities you do for and with the kids!

And think of how dull this list would be without you. LOL

Hi Ann,

I had the sleeping test done with my HMO about 4 years ago. I have no

idea how much it costs. I went there in the evening and all I

remember is they hook you up to some stuff and you (try) to sleep and

in the morning they told me I had no problems at all. Sleep apnea is

very dangerous though...there was recently a case of a sports figure

who died from it. I knew someone that had to use those mask machines,

and she complained that they are loud and fall off? I don't really

know, just glad I don't have it.

I have always had a problem with binge eating, and it's so hard to

stick to a low calorie diet. What helps me though is if I want to eat

a bunch of pizza for dinner, I tell myself to eat some stuff before I

start on the pizza, like salad or fruit or a glass of milk. I try to

" balance " my meals as much as possible instead of eating just one

thing for a meal. By the time I start on the pizza, I eat way less

than I would if I just ate the pizza. That's helped me with the

binging a lot.

Now I just have to find a way to trick myself into exercising...

Take care, Becci
