Guest guest
Those are probably Govinda's bliss bars. I didn't list them here because they are lower on protein. The Mojo bar is probably more like the Govinda's bars in the protein category. They are handy to have around as snacks though. > >Several of the Clif bar energy bars with organic ingredients are > >close. The Mojo and Builder's bar are also from the Clif bar > >people. Guest guest
, I posted a similar question perhaps a couple months ago and got varying opinions regarding protein bars. Since that time, I have been encouraging patients to wait at least 3 months after surgery to use them. I encourage them to be used between meals – like their protein drinks are. I do tell them that I am not a big fan of protein bars b/c they are often glorified candy bars! I encourage them to find ones with less than 200 kcal and at least 15g protein. I have found even though I would rather patients eat protein rich foods – that sometimes for instance if a pt. is going to school or is traveling – that a protein bar is better for them than other options. So I don’t bring them up, but if patients ask I tell them the above guidelines and encourage them to not use bars on a daily basis. Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 8:17 AM 'wmdpg@...'; ' ' Subject: protein bars Good morning, I have a question for everyone regarding the use of protein bara after RNY surgery. I've had a few patients asking me if it's okay for them to use protein bars to help increase their protein intake. I try to have them increase their protein through their diet of course but was wondering when do you guys recommend it be okay for patients to use protein bars. Do you recommend it as a meal replacement or as a snack between meals? Any body have recommendations which are good bars to choose from that you can purchase in a regular super market such as Wal-Mart? I've tried the South Beach bars and Atkins and they're not too bad. When do you guys tell patients it's okay to use these, I think I remember seeing after 3 monts post-op, is this similar to what you recommend? One last question, what about calorie and protein ratio? Thanks in advance for your help. Gregoline, RD Columbus Regional Hospital (812)376-5287 Columbus, IN 47201
Guest guest
, I recommend the protein drinks as b/t meal " snacks " to boost protein intake up to their goal level, which I find is impossible to achieve with food alone unless we had them snacking all day. Once they are on solid food (after 2 months), I tell them protein bars are OK to substitute for the drinks as needed, but they are not preferable to the protein drinks. They tend to have more sugar, sugar alcohols and saturated fat. I am a big advocate of keeping the patients on a regimented 3 meals per day (to get the variety of nutrients, tastes, satisfaction from real food), but feel that if they avoid supplements altogether, they have to make most of their food intake at meal time be protein, or they will never take in enough. I would rather they eat some plant food in each meal, along with a lean protein source, and use supplements (drinks or bars) to fill in b/t healthy meals. Guest guest
Who frowns on bars? I just had one about an hour ago. I use Myoplex light bars. You have to really read the labels though, some have a ton of calories. Also, I'd be careful with Muscle Milk. I know more people who started that stuff and couldn't figure out why they were gaining weight... Because my job takes me from office to office, city to city, I never know if I'm going to be able to have a meal or shove a bar in my face in a parking lot. I keep a cooler in my trunk and some bars in there too. Guest guest
Thank goodeness for bars and shakes! When in a rush, they are a lifesaver! I do think I'll try half reg. and half lite Myoplex, though (I really like the lite alone, but I bought a bunch of the regular and need to use it!). Guest guest
> Why are protein bars frowned upon? and protein shakes are okay? Because many are just candy bars in disguise and people dont study the nutritional stats like on the ones you have chosen. Protein shakes are a convenient way to increase total protein consumption without the added fat or carbs, which many bars can overdose you on. All bars are not created equal ( and I both know this to be a fact as probably btwn her and I we have eaten, at least once, every sports nutrition bar known to the human race! LoL!) Luckily I have stop my addiction and no longer have a cupboard full of them ;-) > but what is the reasoning where it could stall weight >loss/inches loss? Some controversy over the ingredient glycerine. Many feel it many inhibit fatloss because it attracts/holds onto water in your system. Guess its an individual thing, but if you arent losing any pounds nor inches and your daily foods seem spot on then I would toss the bars for 'real' unprocessed foods. joni ---------------------------------------- *Lift well, Eat less, Walk fast, Live long*

They are not so sweet. protein bars Hi All, Do any of you know of any high protein bars pt's could have as an alternative to shakes at times? I have recommended optisource bars in the past which have been successful but was curious of any others. A lot of bars have sugar alcohol's which concerns me because of the laxative effect it has even in pt's who do not have the surgery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
I haven't tried these personally, although I've heard they're yummy. But the Crispy Rice w/ Chocolate bar has 210 cal., 7 g of fat, 27 g of carbs, 220 g of sodium, 6 g of sugar, and 15 g of protein. They also contain sugar alcohols, which some RNY patients have trouble with. Do you know what the source of protein is (i.e., whey, soy, rice)? Do they make a bar with fewer carbs? Guest guest
I allow protein bars (soft) at the soft diet phase. I recommend and sell Bariatrix (which makes smart forme bars) bars and products. They are VERY well accepted and extremely filling. There is 15 grams of pro per bar, CHO content varies by flavor. The patient cost is $13.50 per box of 7. Our company only sells to RD's and MD's. There is a wide variety of products- bars, shakes, clear liquid pro drinks and broths etc. We have an excellent profit margin available for dietitians. Please contact me personally if you are interested in knowing more. BariatrixRD@... Thank you, Aimee
