A few days ago, I wrote to Schachter about the validity of the patch test. Here is his response. Zoe

Dear Zoe,

I have not personally researched the literature on this. My acupuncturist did the test on a number of our patients and there seemed to be a good correlation between rapid absorption and good clinical response to iodine. Intuitively, the test makes sense to me. However, I can't really speak with any authority on the subject. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Sincerely, Schachter

=============================

My letter to him:

Dear Dr. Schachter,I recently decided to start a group on iodine:iodine/Some of the people in the group have challenged the validity of measuringiodine levels by painting the skin. They quote an interview of Dr Derry by Shomon, in which he says: "The 'test' of putting iodine onthe skin to watch how fast it disappears is not an indicator of anything.The iodine disappearance rate is unrelated to thyroid disease or even iodinecontent of the body." And he refers to a couple research studies (which Ihave not yet located) from 1932:1. Nyiri,W., Jannitti,M.. About the fate of free iodine uponapplication to the unbroken animal skin. J Pharmacol Exp Ther45:85-107, 1932.2. Biskind,M.S. Penetration through tissue of iodine in differentsolvents. Proc Soc Exp Biol Med 30:35-37, 1932.What do you know about the validity of the skin test? Has there beenresearch to compare it to Abraham's test or to any other measure of iodinesufficiency?Any comments you could make would be greatly appreciated.Sincerely,Zoe , Ph.D.
