Guest guest
Hi everyone: Has anyone else struggled with getting signals from their stomach? I got my band on 10-18-06 and as of today, I have lost 50lbs. I had my first fill of 1cc back on 12-21-06. My doctor and physician assistant were reluctant to do the fill because I have been losing weight at a good clip without it. However, I asked for it because I do not have a sensation that my stomach is full after I eat. Nor, do I get a clear hunger signal. The nutritionist has consulted with me twice and we have e-mail contact. The surgeon, PA and I met together and came up with a plan. Right now I eat based upon sensation and time. If I do not feel hungry after 3 hours, then I eat again. I go back in March for a re-evaluation. I still measure my food to try to stay at 1/2 cup although they say I can go up to 3/4 cup. I worry a lot about overeating or stretching my pouch. I would appreciate feedback from the group. Thanks, Emmi 255/205/145 PS--The fluroscope when they did my fill really helped me understand more of how my tummy works. I got to see my pouch and how it empties. The fill created a little more hesitation in it.
Guest guest
Emmi, The 1/2 cup meals are really insufficient and you won't get any soft stop signs with tht small amount!! ! That's what the problem is. Let me explain, if I may. (and, also, the soft stop signals usually don't start until we get to a good fill level after several fills). The pouch is made very exactly to the size of about a large golfball - about 3-4 ounces or so . A good Bandster meal (published and documented many places, plus it works from poractical experience) is about a CUP of food. This stretches the pouch just slightly, so that it inneervates the nerves at the top that CAUSE the soft-stop signals. If you don't eat this much, the signals don't come. :-) The other VERY impt thing is that 1/2 cup meals will never supply the needed nutrients for good loss , and a loss that can ne maintained later - critical. We've ALL LOST before - but this time, we need to be doing it in the way that will allow us to KEEP it off. these are the nutrients needed for health - not just for bandsters - for EVERYone. With less than (3) one-cup meals per day and 1-2 small nutritious snacks, it's just impossible to be getting the nutrients in, and good wt loss will not occur. i have seen this -Dan, too, as well as ALL the longtime and experienced Bandsters - time and time again in the many years we have been banded and on the boards. It's really just basic nutrition teaching, from any basic class. - 1200-1500 cal a day, for most women, 1800-2200 for heavier women and most men - protein 50-60 gm a day women, 60-70 for men. More is not needed (for bandsters - the bypass people need a LOT more, since they are not absorbing what they eat) , and extra is uneeded calories that will sabotage wt loss - 25-30 gm of fiber a day - for both wt loss and for bowel health. 1200-1500 mg a day of calcium for both men and women - essential for wt loss, and prevention of several serious diseases 64-100 oz of fluid - more if we exercsie well. - some rasonable exercsie - both cardio and wt training. all this is in the files here - look for the document called " Band Eating rules for website... " A good Bandster meal of solid protein and veggies should last 3-4 hrs. Longer than this on one cup of food is not physiologically possible. A good eating schedule might be something like this: Breakfast (fiber cereal, a few slices of fruit) - 7 am Snack (yogurt, hardboiled egg, etc) 10:30-11 Lunch 12-1 Snack 3-4 pm Dinner 6-7 pm. We don't stretch our pouch with one cup meals. That is the size the pouch is MEANT to accomodate, and we don't get the essential soft- stop signals on less than this. the HARD stop barfing, sliming, pb's come when we have goofed somehow, and that's different , of course. They can happen with 2 bites of food! :-) Hope this helps you undertsand more how the band is meant to work Sandy R, MN at goal x 3 yrs+ > > Hi everyone: > > Has anyone else struggled with getting signals from their stomach? > > I got my band on 10-18-06 and as of today, I have lost 50lbs. Guest guest
Wouldn't it be nice if our stomachs would communicate in English instead of sneezing, burps, sliming, etc....? This is the second time around for me, so I'm trying to be EXTRA careful. Since I tend to low blood sugar I try for six small meals a day. The curious thing for me is that I often do not know that I am hungry and will get 'dry heaves;' not as intense as throwing up, but a reminder to eat something. I carry fruited jello and chicken salad packs that don't have to be refrigerated so I can eat on 'the go.' I continue to fight with a " little voice " that says I might be hungry and keeps piling portions on my plate. Invariably, (I eat cafeteria style at work), I'll dispose of more than half of what is left on my plate. For now, I refuse to feel guilty...... Some swine somewhere will get the benefit!
