I posted the text below to the Trying_Low_oxalate group and I

thought it might be of interest here as well.

Does anyone know of a connection between oxalates and Iodine?

As I have mentioned previously, I have leg problems -- muscle

cramping, and open sores. After discovering a possible link between

my problems and high oxalate, I cut way back on my oxalate intake.

Most of the muscle cramping abated and my legs began to heal. I read

that Iodine can assist in wound healing, so I began to apply tincture

of Iodine to my sore legs, several times a week. Cramping got less and

less. Recently I switched from Tincture of Iodine to Lugol's Iodine

because it is much less expensive.

The Lugol's was much harsher on my hand. I pour Iodine into my

palm and smear it on both legs. I developed an irritation in the

webbing between my fingers, so I discontinued applying Iodine for a

week to allow my hand to heal.

I began suffering leg cramping an few days ago. Not nearly as

severe as when I was on a high oxalate diet, but much more than in the

recent few months. I am on a very strict diet. I had no deviations

in diet over the past month or so. So I was perplexed about what

could be causing the cramping.

Last night, I put on a rubber glove and applied Lugol's to my

legs. No cramping last night at all. None today either. I was

trying to figure out whether the Iodine could possibly have helped the

leg cramping, when I came upon information that Iodine supplementation

has been known to lessen or eliminate leg cramping.

" Following orthoiodosupplementation, . . . We have also had patients

noted relief from leg cramps at night. "
