Just imagine you are bathing in the lovely >vibration of PURE IODINE.... Apparently, you don't use Lugol's Solution. This says iodine actually means violet - http://homepage.mac.com/dtrapp/Elements/color.html Ioeides (Greek) means violet colored. Iodine was named for the color of its vapor with the suffix -ine added in analogy with chlorine, the apparently similar element. ************** But, that's its vapor. http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/pertab/i.html Iodine in pure form is an almost black crystalline solid with a slightly metallic lustre. Warmed gently, it gives off a dense, beautiful blue-violet vapor of diatomic iodine. Iodine in solution in alcohol is called tincture of iodine, and is used as a topical antiseptic. Its different color, reddish brown, indicates a form different from I2. ************************ I would describe Lugol's color as the reddish brown referred to in the last paragraph. Unless you put it in starch, which turns it purple.
