Guest guest
Hi, On my thyroid board someone started a supplement containing iodine. She is having side effects. I remember reading here about some side effects upon initially starting iodine, which have to do with detoxification of the body of bromine and fluoride. Can anyone here kindly supply me with a list of typical temporary detox side effects, and I'll send them to her? She may go off the iodine unless she knows that these are all temporary and normal. Thanks so much, Cherwyn
Guest guest
Dear Cherwyn, I would recommend that she join this group and/or get Brownstein's book, Iodine. Iodine is a very powerful supplement, not to be taken lightly. On this group, we are just beginning to understand the various side effects of iodine supplementation, plus the various detox effects. Bits and pieces can be found in Iodine Basics, Clinical Pearls, and the databases. I would love for you (or someone else) to develop a good list of side effects that we could put in the FAQs. On page 153 in Iodine, Brownstein says, "If the body's detoxification pathways are overloaded when the toxic halides are being released, a detoxification reaction can be triggered. A detoxification reaction can take the form of fatigue, muscle aches, fever, diarrhea, and brain fog, among others. On page 155, he says, "Iodism occurs when the dose of iodine is too high and results in a metallic taste in the mouth, increased salivation, sneezing, headache, and acne. Also, sinus headache, especially headache in the frontal area, and a sense of fever may be present. Iodism occurs in a small minority of patients and is easily rectified by adjusting the dosage of iodine used." Zoe side effects from iodine detox?
