Guest guest
My daughter who had surgery Dec. 8th is also complaining of port pain, and I have read about a lot of people feeling the same. I think it is normal. I also agree I don't think exercising is wise at this point. Hope you feel better. Alyce Port Pain and Exercise I am new to the group. Great Site, thanks. I had surgery on November 21, 06. I am experiencing port pain and was told by my doc that it some times takes up to 2 months for it to feel normal. I am not exercising because I am afraid that it might make things worse. I am going to see him on the 8th of this month. I will talk to him then. In the mean time has anyone had this problem??? __________________________________________________

There is no reason not to be walking or doing other things that don't affect your port area much. And, exercise will often make the pain go away. Really. No excuses. Just do it. As to " normal " , well, you've not been normal and aren't now.....and there are lots of changes to deal with. After years I still get port pain if lie on my belly on a weight bench or similar....but that's because there isn't as much fat over the port.... cheers dan I never complain, never ask why, please don't let my dreams run dry.... www.mylapband.tk Dan Lester, Boise, Idaho, USA Dr. Ortiz, Tijuana, 4/27/03 355/323/212/

After all, you just had surgery, they cut into you, thru the ab muscles, etc. Pain will pass. As far as exercising, I think ALL bandsters should be doing a bunch of walking, starting the day of surgery, unless you have a physical limitation that prevents walking. No, you're probably not ready for ab crunches, etc, but walking is highly recommended by most docs, and most would say after a few weeks you should be able to do most other things as well. Now for those who want to think about PAIN, wait until you get a tummytuck. cheers dan I never complain, never ask why, please don't let my dreams run dry.... www.mylapband.tk Dan Lester, Boise, Idaho, USA Dr. Ortiz, Tijuana, 4/27/03 355/323/212/190 Port Pain and Exercise >I am new to the group. Guest guest
Hi Diane and welcome to this awesome support group!! I've learned more here than I could've hoped for and although you may all not know it, have given me the strength to continue this ongoing battle!! I, too, get pain at the port. I mentioned it to my Doc. She said not to forget, we now have this foreign entity attached to our abdominal muscles. It doesn't not bend or twist as our muscles do. It will be annoying at times for the rest of our lives because it is unforgiving hard plastic. It will pull and push. We have to learn to deal with it. Remember it is not nearly as painful as being large and unhealthy is. Some ab exercises are easier than others. Trial & error, but of course wait until you heal. I couldn't do 1/2 a crunch for about 6 weeks after surgery (I couldn't do them before either ). Bending at the waist was irritating too. Now, I'm banded 9 months, and can bend in half!! I can reach my toes and that is a major feat since I couldn't even see them for years!! Just be patient. Everything will fall into place. This is the best place to be when you are uncertain and scared! Thanks everyone, You do more than you know!! ~Irene 4/17/06 Dr. Ren & Dr. Fielding - NYU -62lbs. Guest guest
I agree with Dan. Port pain is normal during recovery and like all aspects of all surgery, the experience varies from person to person. I had virtually no pain after surgery, but a week later, my port site suddenly hurt like the blazes -- it was swollen and inflamed too. It went away after a couple of days. (Yes, I consulted more experienced bandsters at the time.) The port, being right at the surface, is always going to be a potential " ouch " spot. As for exercise, EVERYONE should be walking unless you have another specific medical condition that precludes it. This does not mean fast walks or long walks, but you have to start somewhere. My preferred exercise is swimming but I couldn't do that until the incisions were closed and dry...so I was out there trudging around the block for the two weeks after my surgery.
