Guest guest
This is a forward from the HSI newsletter from today -- the discussion topic was "adverse effects of iodine supplementation". Zoe http://www.healthiertalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=8742 & highlight=iodine **************************************************** THIS WEEK IN THE HSI HEALTHIER TALK COMMUNITY Whether you use iodine supplements to address a thyroid disorder or an iodine deficiency during pregnancy, you may find this HSI Healthier Talk community forum thread titled "Adverse effects of iodine supplementation" to be a useful advisory. Mari: "Would you please post here any bad reactions you have had to iodine supplementation-at any level? I guess what I am hoping is that no one will post anything." Barbara: "Some folks are deathly allergic to iodine. If they are allergic to shell fish they probably should stay away from it." Sally: "My mother-in-law was seriously allergic to iodine. Almost died from taking it. If our bodies 'need' iodine, how come some people are allergic to it and how do they get it without having an allergic reaction? My cousin said she is allergic to magnesium. How can that be? Won't we die if we are deficient in any one mineral? How can you be allergic to something you can't live without?" Ralph: "Some allergies to minerals are common. Some of the mineral gets in to allow the body to live but not thrive. When my ex was pregnant with my second daughter, she was anemic. The regular docs stuffed her with more iron, which resulted in constipation and more anemia. She was allergic to the iron, and at that time I did not know." JFH: "The biggest problem for all of us is that we are so deficient in iodine, at least in America. So, bromine sneaks in and takes the seat in the thyroid where iodine should be. The thyroid does not know any better; and iodine was not around when it needed it. "Once I thought I was allergic to magnesium. Now I think I have a reaction, however mild, to one form of magnesium. Most people may have reaction to magnesium chloride; because it attempts to displace and remove bromine from the body. That causes detox effects that some may consider allergy." Scorpiotiger: "There are naturally occurring organic iodine compounds and inorganic compounds. Seaweed has both organic and inorganic iodine. Thyroid hormones are an example of organic iodine compounds. If you take thyroid hormone, you are taking an organic iodine compound. T3 has 3 atoms of iodine. T4 has 4 atoms of iodine. "Different organic compounds can have quite different effects on the body (like the difference that T3 has on the body vs T4 - both organic iodine compounds). So...if you are allergic to something and you think you are allergic to iodine in general, you may not be. You might be allergic only to that compound, or something else besides iodine in the compound. From what I've read, allergies to inorganic simple forms of iodine, like Lugols, are rare." **************************************************** ****************************************************
