Hypothyroidism was treated successfully for almost 100 years before the TSH test was developed. Symptoms, and the relief of them with Armour Thyroid, are much more indicitave of hypothyroidism than the labs are. I say Armour Thyroid because if you don't try it, you won't know if it's beneficial for you, and I suspect it's better for most people than synthetic T4. Many of those on Synthroid don't know if they would be better on ARmour, plus even if they switch to ARmour, many doctors don't titrate it correctly and try to persuade the patient they felt better on Synthroid. Note, according to my 1940 Merck Manual (I found at a garage sale), the starting dose of ARmour used to be 3 grains, with the physician going up as high as 9 grains while watching pulse rate and BP to make sure they were in safe ranges. Once they got to 9 grains, if the symptoms weren't relieved, it was obviously something else. Now 3 grains is the upward limit of many doctors, because the goal isn't relief of symptoms, it's to have pretty blood tests. Guest guest
Jane, Definitely symptoms. This question has long been settled, at least on the Natural Thyroid Hormones group, and in the minds of knowledgable thyroid patients and even knowledgeable doctors, most of them non-mainstream in their thinking. There are many conditions which can skew blood tests, especially adrenal insufficiency, which makes the thyroid hormone stay in the blood and not get taken up by the cells. So the blood tests look good, or even hyper, and the person is hypo at the cellular level. Or if a person has thyroid antibodies, it doesn't matter how good their blood tests look, the antibodies can be destroying the thyroid hormones before they ever get to the cells. Low selenium means the T4 won't get converted to T3. And lots and lots of reasons why a normal or low TSH can be meaningless. Skipper, I appreciate your good knowledge so much. I would like to ask those of you on this list who are most knowledgeable for a poll of opinion: Is it preferrable to treat throid Numbers or Thyroid symptoms? Which should take precedence and why? I think this is an important question that many would like to see poll results on. Thank you folks, Jane
Guest guest
Hi, I'm new and haven't posted before but this question stood out, particularly at this time in my life. Symptoms. Please treat symptoms. Twelve years ago I was told my tests were " low normal " . The doctor told me he didn't want to put me on thyroid medicine because I would have to take it the rest of my life. Oh but what a better life it would have been. At that time I was only having minor trouble getting pregnant. It is now twelve years, scads more symptoms, three sinus surgeries and now four thyroid nodules later. I finally found a doctor to put me on Armour a year and a half ago because I had so many symptoms. It did help and I wish I had known to watch my symptoms to see if I was on the right dose. After reading tons on the internet recently, you bet I will be now. Thanks for the excellent question and thanks everyone for all the info. > > Is it preferrable to treat throid Numbers or Thyroid symptoms? Which should take precedence and why?
