Coconut Oil

This sounds like a reasonable amount. You would have to experiment to find out

the best amount as everyone would probably be different. Personally I usually

use 2-3TBSP per day. Some at breakfast and some at dinner.

Subject: coconut oil

I do not cook regularly enough to get a constant intake of coconut

oil so I have decided to take it on a spoon as a daily supplement.

What is the recommended daily amount using this method? I have been

taking 2 Tblspoons twice a day (before breakfast and before dinner.)

Would appreciate comments - thanks.

Hiya

I've used the VCO from TT and coconutinfo-online (currently have TT). It

used to be delivered by Wilderness Family Naturals and no longer is. WFN

has two other coconut oils that seem unprocessed and clean and I believe are

cheaper than the other two. Has anyone tried them?

Any comments?

Thanks

Hi Dale

I find coconut oil far too expensive to cook with. I buy it in 5

litre bottles (I keep topping up a smaller jar for serving) and take

2 tablespoons x 2 a day - before breakfast and before dinner. When

the weather is too cold and the oil sets, I sit the jar in hot water

for a few minutes. I do the same with the large bottle with hot water

in the sink.

I read an article in which Enig said 3 1/2 Tablespoons of

coconut oil would be sufficient for optimal health. Maybe you could

cut the cost of the coconut oil by eating this slightly smaller

amount. There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating more, and in

some instances it would be wise to eat more. You did say it was to

expensive for cooking, so I thought this information might be of

value.

You have got me thinking. I will compare the cost of butter, olive

oil and coconut oil and see which is really the most expensive for me

to buy where I live. Considering I buy coconut oil in large quanities

it may wind up being the cheapest. Has anyone else done such a

comparison?

I've enjoyed wildernessfamilynaturals.com. Nice people,

and the Indian centrifuge oil is quite nice. Their " coconut

powder " is amazingly good (says " dried coconut " but it

is more like sweet ambrosia).

I tried the Tropical Traditions but found it had an after-taste and chunky

texture .. research turned up 'Virgin Oil De Coco-Creme' from Canada and

it is amazingly good the creamy texture and sweet coconut taste it is very

good. Non-processed, non-heated. I plan to try the oil Heidi recommended

next from India for comparison as this is exspensive.

are you asking for comparison with tropical traditions as in health profile? i

don't know a lot about this, but i know that from a taste standpoint

coconut-online is the one that i adore. i could not stomach anything (that i

cooked or baked) with tropical traditions coconut oil in it. i am so happy to

have found coconut oil online--damn, they need for me for a commerial, don't

they? :) heather

either. Hmm, went and tried it again and i still didn't like it and said to

myself - To bad if its supposed to be good for me i just don't like it.

A week or so ago someone posted a link to " coconutoil- online " . Ah!! Free

sample. The little tiny 1/4 oz arrived Friday and to my surprise it is

different. I noticed that it is whiter in color than the SN. Is there a

reason for this? Other than that it at first taste they are similar but this

sample is not as strong and it doesn't seem to have that " afterbite " to it

that made my stomach twitch.

Not sure if i will use it enough to actually buy some or not bit i like it.

I don't remember if anyone said if they had compared this product and the

product from Tropical Traditions (?) or not?

Is there any reason I should be concerned with taking too much coconut oil?

I asked this question on coconut-info but no one has answered. They were

talking recently about how to get down the recommended 3 T per day and I

thought, " Wow, we're starting our day with 1/4 cup each! " So... as long as

we aren't having any weird side affects or anything, is there any reason for

me to be concerned? We don't have smoothies every day, maybe 4 times per

week, with 1/4 coconut oil per person (except the 19month old who has maybe

1/4 of what we drink = 1 T coconut oil), and then I also cook with it quite

a bit.

Thanks every so much!

Absolutely not! In fact, I suspect that coconut oil and other

shorter-chain fats are very good for Wolcott's so-called carb types, whom I

can't believe genuinely do best (long-term) on only 10% fat.

Omega Nutrition has an excellent coconut oil(butter) that I've been using

for the last year. I havn't tried any others so I can't compare.

You should read The Healing Miracles Of Coconut Oil by Bruce Fife. This book

has alot of good information in it about the benifits and misconceptions of

Coconut oils.

Spectrum Naturals coconut oil is made from dried coconut meat. For

years it was RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized), but now it is

unrefined. The premium quality, virgin coconut oils, on the other

hand, are all made from fresh coconut meat. Even with SN now selling

unrefined coconut oil, I still would not recommend it for internal

consumption when there are such superior coconut oils available.

WEll, if you have a health profile it would be interesting but all i am

after is really a " taste test " . My only experience was with the Spectrum

product and i really didn't like it. The coconutoil-online however tastes

very different and even if i don't cook a darn thing i could eat some by

itself. I wonder if the Tropical Traditions tastes anything like the

Spectrum product??

The Spectrum product does NOT taste like Tropical Traditions,

or like WildernessFamilyNaturals' version. Basically the Spectrum

product tastes like hydrogenated Manteca (lard) or like Crisco --

bland, tasteless. Homemade lard is toasty and nice -- " real " coconut

oil is kind of vibrant.

However, beyond that my taste is jaded. WFN coconut oil is nice,

but I could not tell a significant difference from TT. However, I rarely

try them by themselves, they are always mixed with something. For

example:

I was trying to find a portable " fat " to take on car trips and finally

did the following:

1. Melt some coconut oil (which does NOT mean heat it: putting it

into a warm pan is enough).

2. Add some cocoa, coconut, toasted hazelnuts (or nuts of your choice),

maybe some vanilla, and maple cream (like maple syrup, but thicker).

I did all this to taste: I like tons of cocoa, not much sweet.

3. Pour the mixture into little candy cups, freeze. Then put the frozen

cups into the container of your choice: grab a couple when you

are out and about.

All I can say is, these are the BEST chocolates I've had in ages. I was

feeling sorry for myself because I can't have See's anymore, but

now I don't feel sorry for myself at all. Two " Candies " plus some

dried fish and I've got my fat and protein and carbs to feel great

for awhile.

Well, that made it easy. I ordered from coconutoil-online. Unlike the SN -

I liked that taste. I was curious that the SN was more of a gray color

compared to that of CO that is really pretty white. I am trying to separate

truth, fiction and hype!!

Thanks

When i taste the Spectrum product at first it has a nice taste. This quickly

goes down hill and leaves a bad after taste that makes me cringe. I ordered

some form coconutoil- online and see how it goes. I will most likely try

them all but i liked the taste from the sample and the price was better.

Your recipe sounds totally yummy and easy enough that even i will try it!

Went to the health food store to buy some, and instead of 15 jars on the

counter like usual there were none. The woman said the same thing, an article

in

some magazine said coconut oil was good for " pretty much everything " and they

got slammed.

Yep, word is getting out!

It just figures, I have been thinking for weeks about ordering this good

coconut oil now that my Spectrum oil is gone and there it is backordered and

I can't get it. What do you think of their expeller pressed coconut oil?

They say it is tasteless, which I guess is good for some things, but is it

as good/healthful?

FYI, we should have coconut oil back in stock by early next week, but it

will prob. sell out by mid-July because of continuing supply issues. We

carry the organic extra-virgin unheated oil from India. I would say

stocking up might not be a bad idea, given the events of the last month

and what I have been hearing through the importing grapevine.

This is where i buy mine also. There are a couple of other places-- Tropical

Traditions and WildernessFamilyNaturals. There was a discussion about the

differences on the oils maybe a month or so ago so try the archives too. I

settled on this one which is the Coconut Oil Supreme as it seems to be the

most mild so does not overpower other food.

The last order took just about 2 1/2 weeks to get.
