Hi Chasity,

I have PCOS also. I have been going to a Naturopath for help with

PCOS. I take several supplements but they are a combination of herbs

and vitamins. The 2 I take specifically for PCOS are manufactured by

Systemic Formulas Biofunction (I'm not sure if you can buy these

direct - i always get them from my Doc)

1.) Fpms for Female health. This provides nutritional support for

normal cycles.

2.) F+ - Female plus. Provides nutritional support for healthy

female biochemistry and hormonal balance.

by Rx:

3.) B-12 subcutaneously once a month.

I also go for acupuncture on the lower back/female area.

I have tried all the " medical " treatments. Metphormine 500 mgs -

make me vomit in my sleep. (that's always entertaining)

And most recently - Birth control. Which made me absolutely insane,

and was rushed to the ER 2 days ago with a cyst that grew rapidly due

to the major hormone boost (tripled in size in 7 days).

The supplements are a little hard to take with the band. They are

quite large but if you take it slow and space them you should be able

to get them down.

I noticed a huge difference with the supplements. I feel good. The

mood swings are minimal but it does take a while to regulate cycles.

I hope it helps.

Thanks Irene. I did notice that they were large and sometimes hard

to swallow. I am a gagger anyway...it sounds like I am coughing up

a lung everytime I brush my teeth! :-) You can have that picture to

go along with you vomitting in your sleep!!! :-) I will be sure to

post if I can tell a difference after being on them awhile.

We have to be very careful with herbs. They are not regulated as RX

medicines are, BUT they are no different than medicines - many

interact with other drugs or herbs, many have dangerous side-effects,

many (like St 's wort) must be stopped before sugery since they

interfere with coagulation. You also cannot be in sunlight for long

with St. 's wort.

you'll read lots of things on the web that ar not true, not proven,

or actually dangerous. We have to be VERY careful, and accept only

proven things.

When I look things up, I use Google and do a " SCHOLAR SEARCH " - this

weeds out all the NON-scientific stuff, testimonial claims, people

selling stuff that THEY swear works, etc - all the results you get

with a SCHOLAR SEARCH will be formal studies, medical-school

articles, and things you can trust.

I would not take ANY herb without your ob'gyn's specific ok AND

without looking every one up to see the side-effects and interactions.

PCOS is a common medical problem with medical treatments. I have seen

no studies that any herbs are effctive, and several can cause extra

problems.

I'd encourage you to get this book, which has some excellent

inforamation. (Pcos casues insulin resistance, and is what cuases

weight gain and the other problems)

Sandy,

good advice/suggestions on bon supplements - i think many of us forget they

are not regullated in any way and can actually be harmful. Also, i just

ordered the book you mentioned - can't wait to read it.

I neglected to mention that all meds or herbs we take must be smaller

than an aspiring, or cut-up. If they are not, they sit against the

stoma while they slowly dissolve, and can cause all kinds of trouble -

some big, some subtle. Chronic stoma irritation from this type of

thing

is very common, and results in irregular barfing, unstable

restriction,

and other things we may not relate to the medication's effects on the

stoma.

Fish oil caps are especially huge, and I don't know of a small one we

can safely take. why not just have 2 servings of salmon weekly? Tastes

much better than fish oil, and gives us some needed protein too! :-)

I take a small Omega 3 capsule daily that goes down fine. If it is

somehow laying against my pouch could it be hurting it? I would think

an oil would not be irritatiing. Ihave no symptoms of any irritation.

I too take things that won't go through the stoma, but also always

take them with a lot of water, followed by a hot drink, such as

coffee. I've had no problems either. Lately I've been taking the

evil tasting (and smelling) Ketek for bronchitis. Only problem it

causes is burping up the evil taste of it, but that goes away in a

couple minutes, which probably means that it has dissolved and gone

through.

However, Sandy is completely right that things CAN cause problems if

they sit there too long, and if I had a problem that is the first

thing I would consider. I CAN say that SOME things cause me trouble

or pain or both if they sit in my pouch too long....and that's why I

don't eat good, hot New Mexico chile any more, or extra hot curry, or

other spicy things. I don't need the pain, or the likely damage to my

pouch.
