Guest guest
My post-op diet instructions say drink liquids that can be sipped through a straw, but warn against using a straw. Why is that? Willis 357/340/
Guest guest
Theoretically the sucking motion can put stress on your stomach or diaphragm or something. I think that's nonsense, but I'm not a doctor. However, I would counsel that you eat and drink sitting up, and not lying down, no matter what you're eating and with what implements. Guest guest
It's simply that using a straw often makes you swallow more air, which will cause more burping - and Lord knows we don't need any more of that at the beginning! " Full liquids " can be almost ANYthing that is pureed completely smooth, and then thinned enough to get through a straw. Meaty soups, any canned/cooked veggies or fruit without skins, chili, meaty spaghetti sauce, oatmeal, refried beans, stew meat and veggies - lots of choices! It is the CONSISTENCY of the foods, rather than the TYPE of food that is critical. Welcome to Bandland! Guest guest
Some of my patients relieve uncomfortable gas and bloating by eliminating use of straws. Plus they might drink too fast with a straw and drink too much before they know it. We recommend all patients avoid straws.
