Urine test with ketostix. Look like pH strips.

and what is ketosis

Ketones are produced when fat is used for energy instead of carbs. They are

produced when carbs or calories are limited.

I think Atkins induction diet was no more than 20 carbs a day, and you were

supposed to eat a daily salad. Some people can eat more and still be in

ketosis, and it's how you know whether you're burning the fat. It is

sometimes confused with the diabetic state of ketoacidosis, which is

dangerous.

May have depended on the state of your adrenals. The higher the cortisol,

the more likely to be in ketosis.

The medical establishment attacked Dr. Atkins and acted like his diet was

something new. But, a Banting wrote a book about the low carb type

of diet in the 1800s, in the 1960s my brother knew to lose weight one cut

out sugar and starch, which is really the ATkin's concept. It was not new

information, and doctors used to tell people to lose weight, avoid sugar and

starch. He just stated it in book form.

Oh, when I saw the " OT " designation, I remembered Dr. Derry said something

that implied that fat intake would deplete iodine. Something about iodine

lost having something to do with measuring fat solubility, but I don't

remember exactly how that was phrased.

So, on a low carb diet it's probably important to be sure to take adequate

iodine.

Barne's also mentioned the low carb diet as best for hypos, but that they

needed to increase their ARmour dosage while on it. I guess that could have

been the same cause, the fat in the diet reducing iodine, or simply with

creating too much rT3 as any diet will do.

My doctor physically diagnoses low thyroid and believes in Armour thyroid and a modified Atkins diet to lose weight. He dows not address idonine at all. Do you think it may be necessary to supplement as well?

When you are in ketosis (and its not a natural state) you will feel extremely

tired..especially after exertion, you will be more thirsty than ususal and

your breath and sweat smell different. Some describe it as a sweet smell, but

not really...its just different..you will know.

This happens when your liver has used up its glycogen stores, and your body

is looking for different sources of fuel.

Restricting carbs deprives your cells of water, and without adequate water you

liver cannot restore its glycogen levels.

Atkins recommends use of a ketostik to determine if and to what extent one is in ketosis. The more the color approaches purple, the deeper one is in ketosis. You can get them at any drugstore.

Ketosis is a natural state, although maybe not natural for the typical

North American... It probably saves people when they are starving by

forcing the body into a state where they can use fat stores. Also, if

you look at some traditional diets -- especially in the far north --

ketosis is likely a feature of the yearly cycle. If you look at the

traditional Inuit ( " Eskimo " ) diet, there will be parts of the year

when carbohydrates are severely limited. Ketosis is then " natural " .

Hi ,

Ketosis is not bad and I have tried it with Atkins diet. it is a much higher

energy state but also requires much more oxygen. The extra oxygen is real

important to keep it healthy for the body. So one should combine aerobic

exercise with the ketosis to benefit from it.

Interesting note. there are no essential carbs, only essential aminos acids nad

fats. the body can make all the carbs it needs out of protein and/or fat.

Take care,

Yes, fasting glucose is usually just as high whether one ingests carbs or is

on the Atkins Diet. That's most enlightening.

Hypothyroidism on the other hand, frequently will cause low fasting glucose

levels.
