Guest guest
I asked my doctor to be tested for hypothyroidism back in April of last year, I had read an article in Family Circle, about " When Fatuige Isn't Fatuige " and I had every symptom listed for thyroid disease, dry skin, weight gain, fatuige, horse voice, etc...
But not all poeple diagnoised with the disease will have the same symptoms like I had, the most common one is fatuige, tiredness.
A simple blood test is all you need to find out for sure. Depression also goes along with this disease but again not all people will have this symptom. I have since been put on medication to regulate my thyroid and also effexor to help with my depression. It has worked wonders.
Good Luck , keep us posted on the results of your test.
If your have any other questions please feel free to ask this is a very friendly club and very helpful too.

Sunflower........ Guest guest
My symptoms were very similar to yours. I would feel exhausted by the time I finished getting dressed for the day. I also had a problem with my weight and I was losing hair like crazy. Everyone's symptoms are different, but it sounds like you have a lot of the symptoms. I would definately get tested as soon as you can afford to. You may want to look into going to a clinic in your area if money is a problem. It is only a matter of having a blood test. Good Luck!! Guest guest
WHEN I FIRST STARTED WITH THIS, I FELT LIKE I WAS GOING CRAZY. I WOULD BE VERY DEPRESSED, AND DIDN'T GIVE A CARE IN THE WORLD WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. I WAS ALSO LOOSING WEIGHT, LOOSING MY HAIR, COULD NOT STAND HEAT, HAD HEADACHES AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. I COULD HEAR MY HEART POUNDING IN MY CHEST AT NIGHT SO LOUD...BUT IT DIDN'T MATTER, BECAUSE I COULD NOT SLEEP. I WOULD BE UP TILL TWO IN THE MORNING EVERY NIGHT AND GET UP AT SIX FOR WORK...TIRED, TIRED, TIRED I THOUGHT I HAD PMS OR SOMETHING RELATED TO THAT, OR IT WAS BECAUSE MY FATHER HAD JUST PASSED AWAY AND I WAS ALL CRAZY ABOUT THAT. I REALLY THINK MY HUSBAND THOUGHT I " WAS " GOING NUTS! THE DOCTOR I WENT TO AT FIRST WASN'T ANY BETTER. HE TOLD ME TO TAKE EIGHT OF MY BLOOD PRESSURE PILLS A DAY, AND THAT WOULD TAKE CARE OF MY THYROID PROBLEM. YES, IT WOULD OF...AND ME TOO! NOW, 10 YEARS LATER, I STILL GET SOME OF THE OLD FEELINGS, AM STILL TIRED, HAVE GAINED WEIGHT AND CAN'T LOOSE. I WENT THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WAS WHEN THEY REMOVED MY THYROID. BUT I FEEL IT IS STILL VERY IMPORTANT TO GET TESTED, TELL THE DOCTOR HOW YOU FEEL, AND TALK ABOUT IT WHENEVER YOU CAN. I NEVER KNEW HOW MANY OTHERS FELT LIKE ME TILL I JOINED THIS CLUB. I REALLY APPRECIATE BEING A MEMBER.
Guest guest
As soon as you can, you need to go to the doctor and have your thyroid checked. This is not a disease to take lightly. I was misdiagnosed twice and it almost cost me my life. I actually have hyperthyroidism, which made me loose weight instead of gaining weight, but the rest of the symptoms like being very tired, heart palpatations and nervousness were all still there. Guest guest
Hi Maggie-- -This is really strange. It could have been me writing your letter. I haven't had a thyroid since 1987. I first had a " lump " taken out after my 2nd child was born-1979-then in 1987 there was another " lump " on the other side and then after taking it out they said they found cancer! so, I had scans for 5 years which is a horrible to go thru cuz they make you stay off your meds for 5 weeks & then scan you. If you think pms is bad, try being without thyroid meds. I was a witch, a bitch and worse. uncontrollable bouts of depression and anger and everything slowed down- -so bad I didn't dare drive cuz my reflexes were so slow. I guess it's o.k. now but I still take my med every day and I can't lose weight and have no ambition. of course, I am now 12 years older and weigh about 50 pounds more. so I hope to feel like I can identify with some of you. I feel I need to go to a specialist but I need a referral from my m.d. and I don't think he sees a problem?? I'm hoping I learn a few things from all of you. Guest guest
Hi , sorry its been long time since I wrote ,when i saw this reply, I completely related.Few years ago, I had convinced myself that I was healed of this thyroid condition that I had since birth, I guess I was naive and stupid to think that, but I felt that my faith in God had healed me,but that was a lie from hell because it only brought me downhill, not my faith but believing the lie..God didnt tell me I was healed someone else did and I was stupid enough to believe it. Well I learned my lesson believe me.I got so drug out without my medicine and too stubborn to go to dr. not to mention I couldnt afford dr.at the time...I got so depressed and tired ,my legs cramped, i had hairloss and I was then convinced that I was dying. I finally got tired of the way I was feeling and went to the dr. , and they said my thyroid was so out of whack, its awonder im still alive. i was starting to shut down...It took long time but I finally got straightened out ina period of months. But I realized that God wanted me to go to dr. and keep myself up,and that it wasnt His plan to heal me of this. It was to make me stronger as a person and to help others that go through the same thing...because I have lived with this all my life. I realize that I am talkin as a christian, and maybe not everyone on this list is christian but this is my experience , and I hope that even if you dont believe in the same fashion i do that you will still respect me for my beliefs and experience. thanks, Cherie
Guest guest
HI, THANKS FOR WRITING ME BACK. ONE THING I HAVE WONDERED ABOUT IS HOW MANY MEMBERS HAVE SAID THEY HAVE GOTTEN THEIR THYROID PROBLEM AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE...SOME EVEN AS CHILDREN. FOR SOME REASON I THOUHGT LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE, YOU GOT IT WHEN YOU GOT OLDER (I WAS 39) AND IT JUST POPPED UP OUT OF THE BLUE. NO ONE ELSE HAD IT IN MY FAMILY, THAT'S WHY I THOUGHT FOR YEARS MINE CAME FROM STRESS (LIKE I SAID MY FATHER PASSED AWAY THAT YEAR, I HAD KNEE SURGERY, MY HUSBAND HAD BLOODCLOTS IN HIS LEG AND WAS OUT OF WORK FOR THREE MONTHS, MY WORK, ETC).

MY REGULAR MD TELLS ME IT'S BECAUSE I'M OVERWEIGHT (BY 50 POUNDS TOO! MUST BE A MAGIC THYROID NUMBER!!) WHY I FEEL SO BAD ALL THE TIME. I GET UP IN THE MORNING AND FEEL LIKE I HAVEN'T SLEPT, OR SOMETIMES I WILL BE UP TILL TWO AM BECAUSE I CAN'T SLEEP! NOW IN THE LAST 8 OR 9 MONTHS I CAN'T REMEMBER SOME THINGS, I'LL ACTUALLY GO BLANK WHEN I HAVE TO SPELL SOME WORDS WHEN I'M WRITING SOMETHING. IT BOTHERS ME, SCARES ME. GLAD YOU JOINED TO CLUB. I'M FROM NEW YORK TOO...STATEN ISLAND...BUT HAVE BEEN IN FLORIDA FOR 28 YRS.
Guest guest
I too was the same way, not getting enough sleep, always tired all the time, but since I started taking an antidepressant I feel sooo much better, my doctor says that I was having symptoms of depression and that feeling tired all the time was part of it.
I would recommend talking with your doctor about what you may or may not be able to take with your other medication, I am sure glad I did, I was reluctant to take it at first but I am sure glad I did, I also have a 8 year old and a 18 mo old so I just don't get much sleep anyway but I am better now,
I found out about my thyroid in April of last year(99), I was 33, and I actually asked my doctor to be tested for this because I had read an article in a magazine and I had every symptom . My levels were over 100 when they came back I was hardly able to walk. It has taken me some time to bounce back and believe me, I am not 100% yet, but I still have a long way to go , but I am working on it.
I wish you good luck in finding a way to help you sleep better......
sunflower..........
