Guest guest
Stomach virus season is upon us. (the spring too) The REAL flu (influenza) is a respiratory illness and rarely causes much vomiting. with good treatment of the respiratory symptoms, we should not be vomiting very much, if at all. But all the little miserable stomach viruses, that the flu shots cannot protect against, ARE a potential problem for us Bandsters. Vomiting from ANY reason can cause a slip, so we always want to minimize vomiting. Bandsters vomit normally. Since the vomit is under a LOT of pressure, it will get thru even a very small stoma. urp. The vomiting can be quite painful, since the stomach spasms an retching can " pull " the sutures and scar tissue. I strongly suggest that we all have a few anti-suppositories on hand, to use promptly with nausea and vomitting - AFTER we have checked in withour family docs. Most family docs, when we explain the dangers of Bandster vomiting, will give us a RX for a few suppositiories like phenrgan or compazine, to keep on hand, stored in fridge - with safety care if you have little kidlets. If we have stomach cramps and vomiting, first check in with your family doc. they should help decide if it is a stomach virus and ok to use the suppositores. if it is possibly FOOD POISONING, we should not be using the suppositories. With food poisoning, we NEED to get rid of the toxins with the diarrhea and the vomiting, rather than supressing these and prolonging the poisoning. The risk of a slip is LESS serious than the risk of becoming more ill with the toxins. Why suppositories, rather than oral pills? when we are already vomitting, any med taken orally can increaase nausea and vomiting. Also, if we barf an oral med back up, as often happens, it will not work! suppositories are quick and easy to use, always work quickly, and are FAR safer. Be prepared! Have a couple on hand, then you will probably NEVER need them. if you don't have any around, you will get ill, have all the kids there with you alone, not a friend or husband in sight to go get meds for you or help with the kids - and the pharmacy will be closed anyway as it will be 3 am on a weekend. You know 's law! :-) Please do also follow the " how to avoid getting ill " post from a few days ago here. Prevention of illness, when at all possible, is far better. Particularly, eat well, drink lots, wash hands very often, and get good sleep. Sandy r
