Hi - Nuts are good protein - however, they are also VERY high

fat and high-calorie. A few as a snack or added to a good fiber

cereal for breakfast are fine, but, just like peanut butter, are soft

foods and high cal - and we can make better choices for everyday

stuff, imo.

There should be no problem eating them, since they chew up well and

are a soft food when we swallow them.

I love peanut butter, but a tbsp is 100 cal - and (don't know about

you) could eat MANY tbsp at a time, so i avoid it nuts/nut butters

most of the time.

The dry-roasted nuts are better than those cooked in oils, of course,

so read the labels. Of the nuts, almonds and walnuts have the best

nutrition.

About 1 oz. nuts eaten 30 minutes before a meal are known to reduce

ghrelins, or hunger-producing hormones. They contain a lot of

beneficial oils as well, in addition to their relatively high protein

content, and have consistently been shown to reduce risk of heart

disease. In the longitudinal Nurses' Study, nut-eaters were thinner

overall than non nut-eaters, with the theory being that the appetite

reduction benefit of the nuts reduced the other food consumption. Of

course, those of us who might have a habit of over-consuming foods

like this have to learn moderation. I take a serving of about 12

nuts when I do eat them, and put the jar away! I do find my hunger

goes away pretty quickly after I eat them.

Gwenm thanks for porting this.

My thoughts, fwtw: This may all be true :-) but the fact is that we

are all morbidly obese trying deperately to lose weight to save our

lives - so a safe weight loss really should be the priority, imo.

lots of things are " good " for people but not good for BANDSTERS

losing weight.

All these things have some isolated benefits in studies : chocolate,

red wine, nuts, and more - but still, if WE want to lose weight and

WE want to avoid gastric irritants to keep our bands safe, WE should

not have some or much of these things.

Dark chocolate, for instance, does benefit the heart, but no one

should think that this justifies 6 oz a day if we are trying to lose

weight. Red wine does benefit the heart - but also increases breast

cancer. WE always have to look at both the PROS and the CONS.

Nuts may in one study be shown to " reduce hunger " - but we already

have a wonderful tool to reduce hunger, that requirees certain things

to lose well and keep it safe and functional.

It's the protein in the nuts that reduces " hunger " - well-known - so

there are lots of lower-cal protein things to eat.

Just my thoughts, as always - we all have to decide what we want to

do, and take responsibility for any outcomes.
