Guest guest
Jerry: I should have qualified my " liver unfriendly " statement about Actigall. If the liver is functioning normally, then according to the drug references it has low toxicity, but if the not functioning normally, then it can cause further liver damage (primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis) due to the bile salts retained in the liver (http://www.gicare.com/pated/ursodiol.htm) (http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Profs/datasheet/a/Actigallcap.htm). I was on it 2 years ago for stones, and my specialist took me off it because my liver counts really jumped sky high 300's to 700's and went back down to the 300's. Sorry about that Clyde gefox@... wrote: > > Clyde or Debbie.... whoever sent post stating Actigall wasn`t liver > friendly..... with all due respect - what is your source?... > It is my understanding that Actigall is used primarily to disolve > gallstones..... it is also used for certain chronic liver diseases and > has been used in treating post transplant patients as an anti > rejection > measure..... > other than biliary tract problems it would seem that the opposite were > true.... actigall is actually a tool in fighting liver diseases ..... > correct me if I`m wrong. > > respectfully jerry > > eGroups Sponsor > > >

Guest guest
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that we're to take the actigall as long as we're losing 10 lb or more a month. in OK 303/256.5 (2 Month Anniversary)
Guest guest
Actigall and prednisone are two entirely different drugs with entirely different actions...so I don't know how they could be substituted one for the other. Actigall is used mainly for clearing up gallstones or to prevent them. It is more commonly prescribed for PBC. It is neither an immunosuppressant nor an anti-inflammatory.. I'm not sure what its purpose would be for AIH (inflamation of the liver) Perhaps some one could enlighten me. In some cases it could even be detrimental to the liver. love jerry
Guest guest
Jerry, Thanks for the info. You said basically what I thought. I am new at this AIH, but I couldn't really see where Actigall could help with AIH. I was hoping I was wrong because it seems like it would have less side effects than prednisone. Oh, well, I'll just keep on chugging the prednisone for now! W

It is no substitute for immunosuppressants when there is moderate to severe inflamation, but my understanding is that they are often used together with good success. In my case, as I stated, my inflamation is mild and he feels the Actigall is enough to treat me at this time. Also, I just found the following in Palmer's book: " Ursodeoxycholic acid (Actigall; URSO) is a natural bile acid that is found in small quantities in humans, but is found in large quantities in bears. It may be a useful additional medication to prednisone and azathioprine in treating people with AIH. " (page 194) Sharon
Guest guest
sharon....I'm not saying that it isn't used in treating AIH " symptoms " which may include a build up blocking bile ducts within the liver but I still can't see how it would treat the AIH itself. (I believe now they are getting the urso from cows) From every thing I've learned about it, its action is to keep bile flowing. One has to be careful when reading something and in saying something. I said I don't know how Actigall can be used INSTEAD of prednisone, Palmer said " it MAY be useful as an ADDITIONAL medication to prednisone and imuran for treating people WITH AIH. " Note she said " may " and " additional " and for people " with " (not for the disease itself. Now perhaps I misunderstood the original premise in which I thought you were intimating that you were using it to treat THE DISEASE instead of prednisone, in which case I'l have to say that isn't so, but rather you happen to have AIH and as part of treatment you are taking actigall for some of the complications that may accompany it. Please know that you are a special case in that you have a mild case (although I presented evidence thru a study I posted a couple months ago which suggested pred and/or imuran no matter how mild or severe as the optimal way to go.) But I believe it disingenuous to offer hope for those with more serious conditions that they may be able to substitute actigall for the dreaded prednisone. Please excuse me if I'm way off base and I hope the internet (as Harper says) isn't making me sound rude. I'm sincerly trying to help. love jerry
Guest guest
Jerry, Okay - I took it as a joke. Typically, it is hard to offend me. I was obviously having a bad day when we got off on the wrong foot! No, wait, I forgot it had to be the prednisone. Dang it - I have a new excuse for my moodiness and I keep forgetting to use it! By the way, your post on actigall did make sense so I guess I should not get my hopes up on being able to ditch the prednisone for actigall at this point. Better to know the facts and understand it than to get mad at my doctors when they tell me no way! W Re: [ ] bridging fibrosis ...it was a joke (something I've been known to do from time totime) you gave me a straight line and I ran with it.The real answer is... sometimes it happens fast and sometimes it happensslow, it differs.love jerry(you already had answered your own questions and as you know there areno dumb questions (sometimes dumb answers)
Guest guest
Here are two links to abstracts on actigall (urso) and AIH on medline. It has been quite successful in treating overlap AIH/AIC and AIH/PSC. My hep told me recently that there are some promising studies going on at the moment with urso. So keep your ears to the ground. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=12362582 & dopt=Abstract http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=10573515 & dopt=Abstract Cheers, Sophie
Guest guest
http://health./drug/d01005a1 Ursodol is the generic. I ran it in search. This stuff only works on cholesterol based stones. If yours are calcified, as suggested since they " showed up " on a scan, then this medicine won't work. The Dr. protocols for liver cleanses/gall stone purges, will expel both kinds of stones. The apple diet should soften the cholesterol ones. I don't know if it works on calcified ones, but the epsom salt chaser is supposed to open and soften the bile ducts in the liver so they can come out easier. If this drug you mention is the same as what my former doctor was talking about, you have to take it for 2 years to disolve the stones. The Dr. method should be a lot quicker. Maybe a bit more unpleasant but at least you'd get it out of the way and not have the side effects of drugs. Good luck! shefy7 <shefy7@...> wrote: Hello all, after bugging my doctor for a few months I finally got more info. on my gallstones. THere were 4 visible stones. 2 of them are about 10mm and the other 2 are much smaller. I had no idea they were so big! I'm so scared now! Every other organ looks great! I took actigall for a few weeks when I was about 15, too young to take it religiously. My doc. recommends surgery, of course, but I would like to start actigall. He doens't recommend it so I'm having a hard time getting it from him. I've also just ordered the gallbladder package off of sensiblehealth. I'm also getting ayurvedic gallstone medicine from India, hopefully soon! I was wondering if anyone knows about actigall/has taken it/side effects/long term effects/etc.? Thanks! Guest guest
Shefy: I agree with . To me, 10 mm isnt that big. I passed larger stones than that during my last flush and I had absolutely no pain whatsoever. If you look over in the liver flush section of curezone, you can see that other people have passed much, MUCH larger stones. The reality is, if you go to a regular MD, you're going to either get 1) drugs, or 2) cut. Do you really want either? I think you can do it without either. It's at least worth trying first. If it doesnt work out, you can go back to your MD. FWIW, Lorna > > Hello all, after bugging my doctor for a few months I finally got more > info. on my gallstones. Guest guest
I passed several hundred stones during my first cleanse and many thereafter. Some were bigger that 20mm. They only came out during the first few. Thereafter they have been small, but overall must top several thousand. I have been though the cleanse with other people who have passed stones they described as golf-balls. Don't let your doctor scare you - just follow protocol and you'll get them out pain free. That mean parasite cleanse - then bowel - then kidney and only then several liver flushes. Dean Re: actigall Good for you !
