Guest guest
Dear Rima, I will keep you in my prayers. What type of surgery will you be having? Is it a revision or surgery for the reflux? I've been banded 2 years now and have been struggling with acid reflux also. My recent Endoscopy showed severe Esophagitis and Gastritis. They put me on Aciphex. Meanwhile, I've developed a terrible cough at night, can't sleep, etc. I saw my band doc yesterday. He took out 1 cc and now I am at 3 cc's in a VG band. I will have to see my primary today for antibiotics for this cough. Needless to say I am very sad because he just stated that I am one of the small percentage of people who's reflux worsens instead of improves with the band. His plan of action included revision surgery in which he would take out my band completely and replace it with another one and put it up higher than the current...or remove it for good....or convert to bypass surgery. I want to have NONE of these procedures done. Right now I'm just hoping for some healing to occur with almost no restriction and I'm very fearful of gaining back. I've lost 101 and have 50 to go. How much have you lost in the four years? The worst part is that I really need my band. It has helped me so much and I hate the idea that I'm going to have to work twice as hard to continue to lose. I hope everything works out for you. I just want to say thank you to everyone here also for helping me through this whole ordeal and especially to Sandy for her expert advice and to request prayers also. Guest guest
Hi Carol, On your reflux are you being sure not to eat ANYthing for at least two hours before bed? Are you sleeping with your head, or the entire bed, raised? I know those are basic and no insult intended if you're already doing them. And I'm sure you're also avoiding foods that typically worsen, or lead to, reflux. Right? Let us know more. dan I'm thankful for those who are thankful for the things they've done....Arlington www.mylapband.tk or www.riverofdata.com Dan Lester, Boise, Idaho, USA Dr. Ortiz, Tijuana, 4/27/03 355/323/206/190 Re: recent news and request for prayers >Dear Rima, >I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
WOW Carol, that is scary. Hope and pray your situation improve. Did you do the surgery in US or Mexico? Should you have a second opinion? May be Dr. Kuri or Ortiz? Lidia mom1960cq <mom1960cq@...> wrote: Dear Rima, I will keep you in my prayers. What type of surgery will you be having? Guest guest
Hi Dan, I'm usually pretty careful about eating too late. I try to end around 7 or 8 and usually go to bed about 11 or 12. There are those nights when we are busy and never eat until late. By then I'm too hungry to skip or eat very small and I usually pay the price. My husband had gotten these cups that you put the feet of your bed frame in. They worked well for a couple of nights until the middle foot collapesed right through one of the cups. They looked like sturdy plastic, but I guess not sturdy enough to hold our combined 500+ lbs at the time. He says he is going to do the bricks, but I keep saying no because my back seemed real uncomfortable when we were on the incline. It was only like 6 inches and I kept sliding down on the bed and there seemed to be more pressure on my lower back. Anyway, right now I'm sleeping on 3 pillows and I know this is not good because I'm bent at the waist. I saw my primary doc today and got some antibiotics for this cough, so I'm really looking forward to acutally sleeping some time soon. Another issue is that I have not been able to use my c-pap lately. Its too strong now and I kind of just stopped using in for a few months. I did schedule my sleep test finally and I think once I'm back on, I'll probably have better results with the reflux. Do you think that the apnea can aggrivate the reflux? I have been doing pretty good with avoiding the caffeine, chocolate, tomatoes, etc., but gave in just last night to my great tomatoe salad....with italian bread. What nerve I have, right? The aciphex has helped a lot with the heartburn pain, so I got a little brave. The reflux wasn't as bad as its been last night. I'm confused about this. Why do I seem to have these 4-5 day bouts with the reflux and then it settles again? Anyway, thank you for your concern and great advice. Guest guest
Lidia, thanks so much for the prayers. I had my surgery here in the U.S. I'm not sure that a second opinion would give me any better news. There is like only one other local band doc and mine is well known as the better one, so I'm a little hesitant. > > > > Dear All, > > > > I would like to share with you some news, and to ask for your > prayers.. > > As you might or might not already know, I had weight loss surgery > 4 years ago, but in the past year I have been having complications, > among which is acid reflux. Guest guest
Hi Dan, Lidia and Carol, thanks for the kind words and prayers..I am sorry I havent had time to check the board as I am really busy lately and would like to have as much done befoer my surgery next tuesday. My operation is to reposition the band higher as the cure the reflux and also the swelling. My doctor says that its the only thing that will get rid of the reflux 100% and since I have gained around 30 pounds in the past 10 months, after this surgery I will be able to lose it all again, and probably some more. I had my band (swedish adjustable gastric band) in 2003, and lost a total of 80 lbs from my goal of 110 lbs to lose. I had the surgery here in Belgium where I live, and had no problems with it except for the reflux. So I am a bit nervous and excited at the same time for this surgery, I am hoping that it will be the solution for all my problems. Carol, I think if your doctor advises you to do another sugery to reposition the band/make it higher, it might be the answer to your acid reflux. But I dont know, because before the surgery I didnt have reflux, it occured after the surgery, so our problems might be very different. But I am a singer, and heartburns and this reflux has interefered with my ability to sing, I get sore throats all the time and it just hurts so bad and not to mention severely annoying. Anyway, Thanks a lot for your words of encouragement, and I will let you know what happened after I am back from the hospital.. Rima
Guest guest
Rima, I hope all goes well. I'm sorry for your pain, I know how bad it feels. I only sing for church and can't imagine trying to do it all the time with all the pain. I know there is surgery to correct the reflux called fundoplication. Not sure how that would work with a band. I plan to ask my gastro on the next visit. I may just opt for the revision, though. I will be praying for a quick recovery for you. Please stay in touch. Thanks, Carol > > Hi Dan, Lidia and Carol, > thanks for the kind words and prayers..I am sorry I havent had time > to check the board as I am really busy lately and would like to have > as much done befoer my surgery next tuesday. > My operation is to reposition the band higher as the cure the reflux > and also the swelling.
