Guest guest
What's going on that you're not feeling so well? Looked for a post here and on Dr. Kuri's board to see if you posted earlier, but didn't see anything.. Did you eat something that causes trouble? ASt any rate, you need a minimum of about 36 oz of water to get by ( 4 cups) , and at least 8-10 cups for maintenance. With loose stools, avoid things like apple juice which will incrase the diarrhea, and very salty things like buillion whcih will further dehydrate you. Tea, gatorade, other diluted juices are ok. You're dehydrated if your urine is anytghing othe than barely-pale- yellow. Any color at all is the first sign of dehydration. I'll dig up and post to the files later info on " The importance of Water " . Tell us more about how you're not feeling so well. Sandy R > Well here i am feeling worse than I did a few hours ago. Guest guest
Sandy: thanks for responding. I just had surgery on Saturday. Got home yesterday. Was feeling pretty good. Then I bought some Thai soup and only drank about 1/2 to 1 cup of liquid. I began to feel real full. Then the diarreha started. lasted a good 3 hours. Pretty aggressive. I also felt tight in the chest, so I oculd ony sip water. Of course the gas in my shoulder is an ongoing " joy " . I am glad to report the rouns have ceased...so it must have been the broth. I thouhgt maybe the mexico trots. Thats why I was worried about dehydration. Anyway, now my chest has spasms. Deep down in, like a huge burb building...but nothing happens. It is quite uncomfortable. Does gas ex help with this kind of gas? Any advice greatly appreciated. Oh, and I would say that WHITE Thai broth is not clear and I was really dumb to try that. Guest guest
I'd guess you drank too much at a time, but maybe there was something in the Thai soup that irritated you - the Thai soups i have had were not just clear broths, as you need at this point. Several were pretty spicy, too - maybe not the best choice for post-op. The white stuff in your soup was coconut milk, which is very high in calories and hard to digest for some people. It's good to start with only a few tbsp at a time. Sometimes the stoma is quite swollen and this is all it can tolerate at a time for at least a few days. Ay any rate, you're better! And none the worse for wear. Try using a warm heating pad on the chest. It is not really gas in your chest, but the EFFECTS of the gas inserted into your abdoment to inflate it, so the doc can better visualize where he is going. The gas itself disperses within minutes. The diaphragm is irritated by the inserted gas, and that causes shoulder pain. There can be actual GAS in the intestines, from various reasons, that can also be pretty uncomfortable. Some swear Gas- X helps, and i don't see how it could hurt. Try to minimize any air your swallow. stir things very gently to mix them, don'ty shke or whip in a blender, which adds a huge amt. of air to the mix. Sip very slowly and carefully, so you're not swallowing air too. All this will go away soon, i'll bet - keep the faith! And welcome to Bandland! Sandy R > Sandy: thanks for responding. Guest guest
Libbi, When I was on the liquid diet- I thought I'd drink the canned chicken broth. I thought it was a good idea. But it wasn't. The sodium in the broth gave me major diahhrea. I lost my first several pounds thanks to the sodium! I don't know what Thai tea has in it- but that might be part of the problem. > Sandy: thanks for responding. I just had surgery on Saturday. Got > home yesterday. Was feeling pretty good. Guest guest
Libbi, I didn't really measure my water, I just kept a glass with me, and kept sipping all day. I kept alternating broth, apple juice, water. I don't think you can be dehydrated doing that. I too have had the trots, I figure I will until I start eating solids. Today, I am on day 10, and I had the most delicious dinner, 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes, and 2 tablespoons of pureed carrots...and yogurt for breakfast. You have so much to look forward to!!!
