Guest guest
" Mom " , This is one of the reasons fills are done under fluoro - not only to test the fill level afterward, but also to locate the port. Especially in the beginning, it can be beneath several inches of abdominal fat and very hard to feel. A fluoro lights it up like a target. Don't hesitate to ask for a numbing medicine before a fill. There is no reason for pain, especially if the port is hard to locate. I personally suggest never letting anyone poke a port more than 3-4 times. If they cannot get it by then, they need to use a fluoro. Each " blind " poke increases the risk of puncturing the tubing, which would require another surgery to fix, at a good bit of expense. Ports sometimes tilt a bit, but they should be sutured in on all 4 corners, so this should not make accessing them too difficult. (If you're interested, see the port pictures I downloaded to the " photos " here several months ago) Your doc might want to review Inamed info on the newer VG band. It takes 3.5 cc to simply fill the band and tubing, then more to actually inflate the band. THis last part is the real " fill. " Most first fills with the larger VG band are in the range of 4-5.5 cc total. THis band has a larger capacity than the others, so can be a bit trickier to get to a good fill level. but with all bands, it often takes 3-5 fills over several months, at least a mointh apart, to get to " just right " It's very common to be normally hungry, and able to eat as much as before the band, until you get to a good fill level. Just do the best you can to choose good foods and stop at reasonable quantities. The band just won't be helping much quite yet, but you can still lose some good weight if you start some daily exercise and commit to eating better. Be sure to get the 50-60 grams of protein you need (70-80 for your son), as this helps the cravings a lot. Good luck with the fluoro! Guest guest
I have the VG band, and my first fill was 5 ccs. I went back two weeks later for a second fill - they could only get 2 ccs out, but I guess that's normal, since the VG band has lots of places for fluid to " hide " . They added the 2 ccs back and another 3, and I have much better restriction now. But my doc does all his fills under flouro. Speaking of numbing spray, am I the only weirdo to not get numb from it? Both of my fills have hurt, although not horribly so. The second time they added even more numbing stuff, and while it helped a tiny bit, it still hurt. But, I numb up really weird - I have to have a lot more novocaine than the typical person when they do fillings and the like. I'm usually pretty good with pain tolerance, so I don't think I'm a total wuss. Guest guest
Gail, the numbing spray only works on the supreficial skin. There are nerves much deeper than this that are not numbed by spray. If you're like most of us at the start of the band journey, your port is several inches deep and you need more than the very top layer of tissue numbed. Most docs use a tiny lidocaine (novocaine) injection to numb well. If you need more novocaine than others for dental work, this is a big clue that you need the injectable lidocaine, and more than usual. I also need more than " usual. " It's your right as a patient and consumer to ask for and receive adequate numbing for any procedure. You're not a " wuss " at all. why have pain when you don't have to? Guest guest
Hi " mom " , I too have a tilted port. It came loose after a 14 hr stint of vomitting. So now all my fills will have to be under fluoro unless I want to have another surgery to resew down the port. My fourth fill, first under fluoro, was yesterday. It did make it much easier for him to find the port and to see that even though I thought I didn't need more fill, the xray showed that I was still very open and could comfortably swallow the barium after another 1cc was added. (I have the VG also) Since yours will be under fluoro now too, your surgeon shouldn't just put in 2ccs, but instead see what creates adequate restriction when looking at the xray. Let us know how it goes! Deb mom1960cq <mom1960cq@...> wrote: Hi all, Went in for my first fill, but the doc had problems getting to the right spot on my port. Guest guest
Hi Deb, Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been wondering lately if the fact that I had brochitis 4 days post-op could have tilted the port. I was caughing a lot and it was very painful with the incisions being fresh and all. Also, and this sounds strange, I have to bend over to burp....makes me wonder if my band is tilted also. Should I ask the doc if this is possible, or will I sound like a wierdo? I started having to bend over to burp right after the surgery and thought that it would get better later, but I'm still bending....its become something to joke around about lately.. Thanks again. > Hi all, > Went in for my first fill, but the doc had problems getting to the > right spot on my port. They mentioned that it might be " tilted? Guest guest
Hi! Never feel stupid for asking your doctor questions! I'm a firm believer in the old adage " The only stupid question is the one not asked. " That does sound a little odd to have do that. You should definately ask anytime something seems off. I'm sure he's heard it all before anyway and then some. LOL Kerri > Also, and this sounds strange, I > have to bend over to burp....
