Guest guest
Does this go once the correct medication doseage is achieved? Mine seems to be getting much worse recently and the GP will only raise my dose of levothyroxine dependant on the next blood test results. My blood test is next Friday first thing in the morning. For the last 6 weeks I've been on 100mcg, which at least the GP is now prescribing as 100mcg rather than 50mcg. Currently, apart from the odd day of inpenetrable brain fog, most of my symptoms (even things I hadn't realised were symptoms) have eased Now I'm left with swollen burning eyes, continued unwarranted weight- gain and painful fluid retention which somedays limits my range of movement. The new batch of pills are Actavis, rather than the Teva ones which coincided with the development of my eye irritation. It will be interesting to see if the eye irritation eases. Over the counter diuretics did not work and I'm loathe to press the GP for diuretics if the fluid retention is a useful indicator that my body is still lacking the correct amount of thyroid hormone. Guest guest
Re the fluid retention: This is a problem for me too Tracey, so I hope someone knows the answer to this. I look like I've put on weight on my eyelids! Upper arms and ankles are very puffy too, but the fluid retention seems to go up and down a bit depending on the day. I'm happy that the brain fog has lifted for you. I still remember your message quite a while ago about how difficult the brain fog was to deal with. I find it difficult to deal with. I still suffer from it but it's getting slightly better since I started using T3, so I'm thankful for small blessings. P
Guest guest
As ever this is terrific info from Sheila but if I may just add one thing............. cranberry juice is best taken at least 4 hours after your hypot meds as it can interact with and make them less affective. The same goes for grapefruit. M. > > > Drink plenty of water. It may sound contradictory, but a well- hydrated body is less likely to retain fluid. Cut back on dehydrating drinks such as tea, coffee and alcohol and replace them with cranberry juice as this has a mild diuretic action. Lie down with your legs higher than your head, and whenever it is possible, exercise regularly. >
Guest guest
This info is useful to me too. Thanks Sheila and ! P
Guest guest
Thanks for that info Densie. Isn't grapefruit supposed to lessen the effect of the contraceptive pill too? I used to love cranberry juice but I've not been able to find the unadulterated stuff. Our supermarket only seems to do that horribly sugary watered down version, not that gorgeous tart juice they used to sell. Guest guest
Hi Tracey, That's a great shame about the cranberry juice.... have you looked into the UK oceanspray website - maybe you can find a supplier thru them? Try http://www.oceanspray.co.uk/ OR the US website http://www.oceanspray.com/ There's some good looking recipes on both of these too. Guest guest
Just to add a potentially confusing element to this discussion.... I've been looking into fluid retention too lately. I know the standard advice is to minimise salt intake. However, it appears that if you have compromised adrenal function, you may need to actually INCREASE salt. Can't remember if you've got weak adrenals, Tracey. Anyway, here's an article which explains a bit.. http://www.fred.net/slowup/hai96.html Janet
Guest guest
Thanks Janet, that is a really interesting article. I loved the bit about the significance of the woman being chased by cows! I don't think my adrenals are as stressed as they were. My body is functioning better all round these days, apart from the damned fluid and weight gain! Oddly I've not sweated much in the past few years but since I've been on thyroxine the sweat has begun to flow normally again. So maybe that salt-loss thing is now part of my problem, though I had thought my salt intake was OK. I've been taking extra care to drink plenty of water but to no avail. Strangely I just don't get thirsty so I have to remind myself to drink. My ankles rarely swell or get puffy, and yet it is always the ankles which get prodded by GPs for signs of fluid retention. My problem area goes from my knees up to and including my belly plus my face, especially around my eyes. Most people assume it is fat but I know it aint! It is strange fluid build up as it is all over and is solid yet feels squidgy. I don't get dents in it as it is springy. On the days when it is not so bad, I am left with fine lines and loose skin where it has stretched to accommodate my extra volume.
