Carol,

My doctor always has to poke me 2 or 3 times to find it. However, his

nurse who does fills always gets me the first time.

I don't know if others have issues with doctors having to stick more

than once but, having to stick 2 times per fill doesn't seem way out of

the range or normal?

ps...however, if you are uncomfortable you can try to find someone else

to do your after care. Alot of doctors will not take other doctors

patients though.

Carol, Think about this. The area they are trying to hit is dime-

sized. It is out of sight. it is below 4-6 inches of fat (usually).

Most docs do not use a fluoro to locate it.

ly, i'm amazed they do so well most of the time!

I'd give this guy more chances, as he really sounds ok to me. I surely

have not hit the port on the first try every time!!

I think a couple tries per fill is acceptbie, but i would not

personally allow more than 3 tries before I would insist on help from a

fluoro.

What do others think?

my port is so prominent, i can put my finger on it dead center

everytime. i'm sure i could hit it with a needle on the first try.

of course, someone would have to pick me up off the floor cuz even

thinking about sticking myself is making me a little dizzy. oh boy,

i think i have the vapors. LOL

first of all, if i were administering fills, i would never comment

that i bent a needle on anyone while a patient were in the room.

that said, my doc is so good (i hope i don't jinx him with this

comment) he never misses.

their mamas would " get the vapors " .

I work with a georgia boy who gets them all the time....him and Miss

Pitty Pat.

Debbie, That's one option, of course, but this involves a lot of

radiation over time, directly to the abdominal organs , and NO

radiation is safe. I personally would not have a fluoro with every

fill, if I had a competant fill provide.

I don't think anyone is putting anyone down here, just expressing

their own opinions, which is always welcome.

It's true that fat has far fewer pain receptors than other tissue -

but the skin has plenty of " pain " nerves to feel poking.

I always suggest that people ask for numbing with the first fill, so

they can relax and see what a big deal most fills are NOT. Then, if

the doc has to poke a bit to find thre deep ports, it will not hurt -

and he/she can relax too!

With later fills, we can decide if we want to be numbed or not.

IMO, the docs should be asking if we wish to be numbed - but if not,

it is OUR responsibility to request it if we wish.

Penny,

if getting a local makes you feel better (its true for me) than go

for it. has someone actually criticized you for that?

when my wife was pregnant with our second child, she told me she

wanted an epidural immediately. now, i'm in favor of anesthesia,

but when she was only 7 months pregnant? i felt she could have shown

some restraint and waited to at least one month to go. LOL

happy holidays,
