Guest guest
In our area we are only allowed to choose from 5 hospitals who are within our PCT's area. In some areas you might be able to but in ours in will not be possible until 2010 I believe. Lilian Gone are the days when you had to see the endo of your GPs choosing. Nowadays you tell the doc who you want to see and where, they give you a password and e-mail the hospital. You ring the hospital, give them the password and make the appointment with the endo of your choice!!That's the rules!!

Guest guest
Re have you got a reference for this Hi Sheila and everyone - the guidance is from the Choose and Book NHS policy - I think nne put this link in the files. Each PCT will have a Directory of Services (DoS) in which are listed all the hospitals or other providers, which the PCTs have contracted with for particular conditions - typically there will be 4 or 5 of these providers. Some GPs will only want to refer to these providers. However, they can refer to any provider that the patient wants to see, but at this stage I dont think they have to do this! Sometimes they dont realise they can refer to other providers and we just need to advise them that they just do a referral in the old fashioned way of writing a referral letter (they cant refer through the choose and book system if the provider isnt on the DoS). The costs are the same whichever hospital you choose but there is still an issue around transport if you want to go out of the area, but this isnt an issue if you are prepared to take yourself anyway! If anyone is having difficulty being referred to the hospital or provider of choice, then a suggestion that you might contact the PCT might be enough to make them change their minds!! Guest guest
I belong to "the friends of our doctors surgery" and they hold meetings every quarter. When this referral system, and getting appointments through computer started, we had a big meeting with the members and the local PCT representative. It was asked at that meeting (by me actually because I would have liked to be referred to someone outside the area) whether anyone can ask to be referred outside the five listed. The answer was no, the PCT will not allow it unless there was a specific condition that they did not have a consultant who deals with it within the five hospitals. They said that it will come when we can choose and in fact it was starting in some areas now, but it will not be in our area until two thousand and ten. A bit like changing to digital. Some will be changing in 2008 whereas our area will be the last to have to change.
