Guest guest
40 pounds in 6 months is great so the band must be doing something, that's just my opinion though. How much are you eating at each meal? How often do you get real hunger (not head hunger)? Sometimes being a loser is a GOOD thing! 5'11 " 306 / 254 / 189 PreOp / Now/ Goal Banded 09/14/06 @...: michellejacksonb@...: Thu, 29 May 2008 13:38:13 +0000Subject: Fill Question I was banded in December 2007. I had my second fill 2 weeks ago today and I now have almost 6cc's in my band. I feel very restricted and have finally been losing weight. I have lost 13 pounds in 2 weeks. I'm not sure if I am overfilled though. I can only eat a few bites of something before I am full. I have only vomited once. I eat an average of 800 calories a day.. What do y'all think. Guest guest
Having been in overfill hell, I would say be VERY CAREFUL! Better underfilled than overfilled. I also think 800 calories may cause your body to start hoarding calories. Just a thought- that may be too few. i am not a nutricianist, however. Good luck! fill question Hello Everyone, I have a question. I had my second fill 2 weeks ago today and I now have almost 6cc's in my band. I feel very restricted and have finally been losing weight. Guest guest
You need to take in at least double that many calories. Sounds like you're too tight. Guest guest
I believe you are way too tight. remember, we are never trying to eat as little as possible. we did that before with other starvation diets, and they all backfired and we regained badly. we don't want to do that yet again, so we have to learn a lot of new things now, with the band. 13 # in 2 weeks is not good, (unless you're starting in the 400-500# range) even though it is tempting to think it is. it can only be water weight and muscle loss from inadequate calories and nutrition. think about it - 13 # is 45,500 calories. It's impossible tio eat that many FEWER calories in 13 days. you can't possiblyt be getting in good nutrition. 800 cal/day is way too little, and into the " deprivation mode " range (I don't believe in calling it " starvation mode " as many do, because it really is not starvation) But the result is very unsafe loss - if we lose at all. most don't , or stall out quickly, since the body is so threatened. Please review the 3 fill documents in the files here, to learn what a good fill is. Sounds as if your doc has not gone over any of this... Basically, we must be able to eat 1-1.5 cups of good food per meal, and get in at least 1200-1500 cal a day. In less than this, it's just not possible to meet the protein, fiber, calcium, good carbs goals for health and safe loss. You also need to be able to eat solid meats to make the band work, and i'm guessing being this tight, you are only able to eat soft foods. You need some fill out before your stomach is damaged, imo. Plus, banding is not supposed to be about misery and deprivation! we should be able to eat and enjoy, still, delicious small meals with our family and friends. Good food is an impt part of life! Guest guest
Sheila, that's a question only your fill person can answer. they shoul d a good assessment of severql factors, to decide, including - - how much your're eating - any trouble with good band foods (solid meat/chicken/veggies, promarily) - hungry between meals? - how has weight loss bveen? - what do YOU think? (question reserved only for experienced bandsters! :-) We are rarely obhective and often want too mcuh in, or too littel out) Just as before, you'll likely need 3-5 small gradual fills to get to a safe and good level. You can get more monthly, as always, but i'd urg you to go slowly so you don't get in a bit of trouble again. you've done too way we;ll even unfilled, to risk and overfill an going backwards again. Guest guest
I'm sorry your doc seems to be not very supportive. When they react this way, it often means they are feeling that they did not give you the education you needed, or that something else might be wrong. first, a few things.. the bands are never " full. " they can hold way more than the " suggestd max " . No one has ever ever had a truly FULL band - that would mean like 30-40 cc, which is not possible. But when we are at hgher level and not getting good help, somthuing is not quite right, and a good assessment is needed. It often IS eating problems, and that is why it is so impt to have good teaching along the way, starting from before surgery. How have you lost, so far? other possibilities: 1. you got a band that was too big for you.some docs, for awhile, put in the VG into everyone, even if they were smaller than the recommendstion for this band 2. you may possibly have a leak - does the doc pull out and check the fill amt before dding more, to see if most is still there? 3. the band may be a little out of position - have you had a recent fluoro? 4. other problems may be going on that would also be diagnosed with a fluoro. Have you ever been way too tight for long, or vomitted a lot? Have you been very serious about exercsie, meeting band nutrition needs, working with a therapist on eating and food issues? The band is only a help to all these - it is never the whole solution,. Please go into the files her adprint out the document called the " Band eating guide " . Go over it, and see if you knew and are following these guidelines pretty well. Let us know thr answers from above, please, and we can help more. don't give up - here is always a solution. sandy r > > I don't understand whether after you are filled it empties or not. Guest guest
Do NOT go below 1400 to 1800 calories a day. Most of us have wide variation in how tight we are. Our bodies change with how well hydrated we are, time of the month (at least for many women), and a million other factors, many of which aren't explainable. Tuna and chicken are great foods, but are VERY easy to get stuck, since they're so soft we think they'll just go right through. But they're tough and stringy. Think of how packed that chicken was in the can, but still " soft " so it seems like you can eat big bites, not chew much, etc. Remember to chew 20 times per bite. And small bites. It IS possible to not drink during meals. How? Don't have any liquids at the table. If you are eating out, drink until the food comes and then tell the waiter to take the glass away. They may think it weird, but so what? Just insist that they do so. I once had a waitress who didn't want to, but then I told her I was SURE I'd knock it over if she didn't. She didn't. And I did. She got the message I guess. dan Monday, August 4, 2008, 11:15:51 PM, you wrote: > Maybe I have to drastically cut the calories I consume, but when I go > lower than 1000 calories I am constantly hungry. Guest guest
Speaking of canned chicken. I find that the canned chicken tends to be tougher and stringier than when I boil a breast in water. Then I chop it finely (pea size or smaller) before using it for a meal. Never have had a problem. M. _________________________________________________________________ Get more from your digital life. Guest guest
I had my band placed on 03-23-09 and my first fill on 06-04-09. I thought I should have felt some sort of restriction. I had 5cc inserted in a 10cc band. I can still eat a full plate of food, have no full feeling after eating, and no side effects. I have pretty much stayed to the diet and eating about 1000 calories a day. I am down 93 lbs but feel it is from the dieting and the 1000 calories a day. My question is should I wait until my next appointment in 5 weeks to advise the doctor, or should I contact him right away and see about another fill? I do enjoy all the information that this group provides. Larew nc911@... 390/297/
Guest guest
Hi, john - you have a number of misconceptions here, I'm afraid, and I'm sorry your doc did not do much better teaching so you knew what to expect. Several things you say concern me a lot. first of all, it usually takes 3-5 small monthly fills to creep up slowly on a good fill level. the first 1-2 fills are not even meant to be enough, but meant only as a gradual introduction to stomach pressure. the stomach is a very sensitive ogan, and rebels badly at sudden changes, like fill pressure. If you are still losing, you do not and did not need a fill at all. further, we can get fills a month apart. It takes 1-2 weeks for some fills to take effect. I hope your doc would not give more fill sooner than that. The inamed written materials for the surgeons i clear on this issue. secondly, your intake is FAR FAR too little for either safety or good nutrition. Depending on your start weight, most men need at least 1800-2000 cal a day to start. Never below 1200, even after you have lost a lot of weight later on. 1000 cal a day is a starvation diet, and will further screw up your metabolism so you'll regain again easily later on. Also, we need to cut back calories as we lose (since we need fewer and fewer) and you arr already too low and will have nowhere to go to continue loss later on. You are in a very precarious position right now, and I'd urge you to start at least 1800-2000 cal a day. I also hope you're on the Bariatric advantage vitamins, calcium, etc as your intake has been very inadequate and you're surely deficient by now. studies show most obese people go into WLS already deficient, and then become more so. standard multi-vits are very inadequate, as they do not have the ingredients, quantity, or proven quality bandsters need. 1000 cal a day cannot supply even the basic nutrition we need for health or safe loss. sure, you're losing, but we have all lost before on starvation diets - and it came right back again, plus more. (or none of us would be here needing a band) It is no different with the band. many many regain again if they lost in an unsafe way.-We are never trying to eat as little as possible. men need 70 gm of protein or more daily, 25 gm of fiber, omega 3 oils, an the good carbs from low GI fruits an veggies. you cannot possibly be meeting these goals. All these issues are covered in the files here, and in the Band guide and other things you were sent automatically when you joined. please take a chance to go over these essential things. Guest guest
Hello Sandy, Thanks for your insight. I was eating a lot of tuna fish when I was in my pre-surgery and continue to eat a lot of fish and chicken mostly. I eat the vegetables, but in small quantities. I have been at the same weight for about 2 weeks, and it seems when I go on a liquid diet of Glycerna type liquids for 2 days, I drop 10 lbs quickly. I will contact my dietician about the intake. She took me to 1200 calories a day when I was pre-surgery but haven't talked to her since other than at support meetings. I take a daily multi-vitamin and have never felt better. I drink protein shakes with skim milk, and get between 70-100g of protein daily. I tend to look at the protein in foods when I make my food choices. I eat mashed potatoes as my " treat " with my meals and sugar peas in small amounts. I will definitely do some checking. Thanks for your input. Guest guest
, Be careful of tuna. Most has high mercury levels, which are very unsafe. most scientists say to eat no more than 1 can a week. For pregnant women, it's one can every month. see this chart : http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-SpecificInformation/Seafood/Foodborne\ PathogensContaminants/Methylmercury/ucm115644.htm your other protein sources are , but we neede about 50% of the diet from the good carbs, and also about 15% from the good oils and fats. you can't possibly be meeting these essential needs in only 1000 cal a day. It's hard for me to believe you weren't given specific bandster eating guidance, but i know many are not. his is a real disservice to patients, and badly handicaps them in the important first 6-12 months. How you feel is not the indicator. It takes vry serious damage to feel different. Your protein intake likely has prevented anemia, which is the only thing that would make you feel bad quickly. vitamin and mineral deficiencies show up as cancers, metabolic problems, various diseases later on. Be sure your nutritionist is band-knowlegeable. many are not at all. What about the whole grains and fiber? Daily fiber cereal? Again, please see the Band guide in the files. I'm afraid It's impossible to drop 10# in 2 days safely. it can only be water weight, which comes right back. it's also dangerous to do this to the kidneys. Please realize we are not simply trying to lose weight at any cost. we want only to lose slowly and safely- that is the ONLY type of loss that lasts, or does not cause other health problems down the line. Guest guest
Hi , No argument with anything that Sandy says. I don't know what your original and current weights are, but do let me know. I'd be surprised if you didn't need at least 1800 to 2400 calories a day, depending on how much exercise you're getting. Yeah, I'm a guy. And that is still losing amazingly fast, and it is really TOO FAST.
