After losing 57 lbs, I had mine checked recently and it was the same as

before my band, around 240, I was really upset. Not only that, my blood pressure

is still high, as well as my tricligerides. I cannot believe that losing this

much weight would not result in lower readings.

after 9 months banded and a loss of about 85 lbs, i had my cholestrol

checked last fall. it had been quite high but now is just at the high

end of normal. (didn't take any cholestrol lowering drugs during this

time either) my blood pressure was never high but had started to

climb a bit, its back down to about 110/60.

I don't know that I have ever posted here, but I wanted to share

probably my greatest NSV to date. One of the reasons i chose to be

banded was my triglyceride level of over 400. I recently had new

labs done and my triglycerides are at 125!!!! And that is with just

a 45 pound weight loss. I have a couple of very happy doctors. I

figure I have added a good 25 years to my life. My other cholesterol

levels are within normal limits also. I was advised to eat a bit

more fish. So thats my story!

I think we need to be aware that while we're still in the obese category,

or considered very overweight, that these numbers might not be that much

improved. I just had my first bloodwork after banding. Diabetes is much

improved, but we had to add back the triglyceride pill that my surgeon

eliminated at the time of surgery. My Internist says as time goes by and I

close in on goal weight, more of the medications will have started going by

the wayside. Diabetes is down to 3 pills a day instead of 6 plus 3 shots,

and my meds are so few in comparison to pre-band.

I think it takes patience. After all, metabolic syndrome, which most of us

have, is a hereditary condition and may not be totally eradicated by losing

weight. But, we will ALL improve--or at least about 95% of us will. And

life does get better when we're thinner, even if we take some of our

ailments with us on the trip. I'll take skinny even if I DO have to

continue to medicate a couple of conditions. Even the SKINNY people in my

Dad's side of the family have high triglycerides.

Just my opinion.

Melinda,

Glad to see you posting.

Like you, I've had great reports from my doctor. I had high

cholesterol, high b.p. and type 2 diabetes pre-op.

All those are gone now! My doctor is thrilled too. I can also walk

a lot better these days. I struggled badly before with my left

knee..and osteoarthritis. I still have it, but it's much improved

now.

I am getting mine retested next week. They took me off my pill in

December because my liver numbers were going up from the meds, so

this will be the first time tested since surgery and off meds, it

will be an interesting comparison.

High choloesterol goes hand in hand with severe obesity. It often

comes down with weight loss because of the improved diet. Don't be

afraid to take the cholesterol-lowering meds. preventing that plaque

buildup in your ateries is crucial for heart health, and cannot

usually be reversed except with surgery. sandy RN
