might have to do with dose/might have to do with needing iodide, not iodine.

If goiter is caused by iodine defiency, then why would taking iodine cause a goiter? This doesn't make sense to me. I have Dr. Brownstein's book, but he doesn't say anything about this.

, this is one of the important controversies in the iodine literature. In most cases, low iodine (and/or high goitrogens) causes goiter. However, high iodine can also sometimes cause goiter -- which is then called Iodine-induced goiter.

Similarly, low iodine contributes to hypothyroidism. However, high iodine can also sometimes cause hypothyroidism -- which is then called Iodine-induced hypothyroidism (IIH).

Nobody quite knows why iodine can cause goiter and hypothyroidism. There is the Wolff-Chaikoff effect (that Abraham argues against, but that most people believe to be true).

This is why I was so interested in that Chinese article on selenium that posted, because it seemed to say that selenium was an important factor in explaining iodine-induced goiter. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to get a translation that is understandable.

Iodine issues are never simple!!!

This issue of iodine-induced thyroid diseases is at the heart of the conventional view on iodine -- i.e., too much iodine is dangerous. Even Abraham sees ideal iodine as falling in a range, with too little being bad and too much as also being problematic.

If you don't get relief from salt loading , back down on your iodine dose or

maybe try pulse dosing until the symptoms abate. Personally I'd back the dose

down and work your way back slower.

If we miss a question about iodine, don't worry about posting and asking again.

The list is very busy and the moderators have been tied up recently.

Hello Johanna,

Not sure if you've had a reply yet. I too have a goitre (4 nodules, with

suspected hyperT, but my blood tests keep changing, and my hair analysis test

suggests I have hypoT). Anyway, I started on lugol's at 3% 4 weeks ago. I took 1

drop per day which is about 3mg of iodine (I think) and my goitre also swelled.

Someone on this forum replied to my query and suggested that this is normal due

to the goitre swelling in order to absorb all the essential nutrients now coming

its way. I consequently continued taking 1 drop of Lugol's per day and the extra

swelling of my goitre lasted for a couple of weeks before going back down to its

usual size. Since then I have increased the dose by 1 drop each week. At the

beginning of week 4 I increased the dose to around 12 mg of iodine a week so I

switched to Iodoral, 1 tab at 12.5 mg. I took that daily for a week and

everything was fine until yesterday when it was time to increase my dose again.

Yesterday I took a 12.5 mg dose of iodoral plus one drop of lugol's at 3%

(?approx 15.5 mg altogether) and my goitre is up like a balloon this morning,

also I have a similar sensation as you regarding the hard feeling in upper chest

and over my thyroid. I don't know if it's connected to my iodine increase as I

also have a problem balancing my minerals (I have a bowel problem too), but I

plan to reduce back down to 12.5 mg and stay on that another week or two before

increasing the dose again. What I'm trying to say is that maybe you've started

on too high a dose?

Oh yes, are you taking any other supplements as well as iodine? When I started

taking magnesium citrate in 200 mg capsules it felt like I'd swallowed a brick.

It was very uncomfortable. The sensation moved from my stomach to my gut over a

period of a few hours. I've now switched to magnesium bisglycinate 100mg tabs,

in the hope that I can digest those. Hope you get some joy. Meadowsweet :-)
