Dr. Brownstein did 50 mgs for several years because he told me he was throwing off Bromide for 4 years. I have been on 50 mgs for 7 1/2 mos and 75 mgs for 2 weeks. I don't see myself coming off of this in the next few months. I would say it will be over 1 year by the time I am done.

anyone high dose for over a year?

after reading this statement, I am curious if anyone here has been on 50 mg. iodine for over a year?http://www.inchem.org/documents/jecfa/jecmono/v024je11.htmIodine dose was evaluated on the basis of milligrams per day;however, the length of time of intake was highly variableamong case reports. In some cases, the excess iodine was takenfor many years before a response was seen. In other cases, arelatively short time was involved.cindi

Would you consider the iodine tincture skin patch test as a good measure to see if one is saturated?

I am not sure. For me the first time I did it and it stayed for quite a few hours. My stats are in the groups files. I had no iodine in my system so you would think it would have been gone within an hour or so like some. I don't know. My ND swears by it but there is no scientific evidence to support it that I can find.

Is anyone concerned, regarding long term iodine use, the effect it may have in slowing the production of the thyroid even further??? And any other undesired system effects to be aware of? Just trying to get a full forest picture. Michigan : )ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...> wrote: Dr. Brownstein did 50 mgs for several years because he told me he was throwing off Bromide for 4

Not me because I don't have a thyroid anymore. :)

I'm not concerned, but then I'm only taking two drops of Lugol's a day (12.5

mg), which is allegedly equivalent to the Japanese intake of iodine.

I think that on a long term basis, Brownstein eventually goes down to 12.5

mg, but I don't have his book.

Also, nothing is as simple as it appears on the surface. It seems as though

taking iodine raises TSH. Is this because the thyroid has more ability to

produce thyroid hormone? Just because that doesn't show up on blood tests,

doesn't mean it's not effectively true. If iodine helps thyroid hormone to

be utilized by the cells more efficiently, then it could help in ways that

don't show up on lab tests, which have a lot of limits. Doctors place way

too much reliance on them.

Besides, on 3 grains of ARmour, theoretically your thyroid is shut down and

not producing its own hormone anyway. Or at least, it's shut off so it's

not soaking up any iodine. Dr. Derry said that, and others in this group

have posted things that show that synthroid or Armour tends to " deplete " the

thyroid of iodine.

Which is probably why in order to see if you were hypo because you were

iodine deficient in the first place (not far fetched for Michiganders), you

may need to go off thyroid meds and see what happens. I don't think there's

any other way to know.

Came across this interesting article of Peace Corp workers exposed

for 32 months to approximately 50mg/day of iodine:

Effects of Chronic Iodine Excess in a Cohort of Long-Term American

Workers in West Africa

http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/full/87/12/5499

" ...PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS in Niger, West Africa, were noted to have

a high prevalence of goiter from 1995–1998. Initial investigation

revealed 39 suspected cases of thyroid abnormality. Peace Corps

volunteers in many areas of Africa drink iodine-enriched water to

avoid microbial contamination, and it was subsequently found that

the two-stage iodine-resin ceramic filters in use in Niger delivered

a mean concentration of 10 mg iodine/liter to the drinking water

(1). There was no evidence of a high concentration of iodine in the

diet, salt, medications, or nutritional supplements.

As the arid climate in Niger results in the daily consumption of 5–9

liters water, the volunteers consumed at least 50 mg iodine daily,

which is approximately 300 times the daily U.S. Recommended Dietary

Allowance (2). Urinary iodine excretion in this iodine-enriched

population ranged from 392–153,780 µg/liter (median, 5,048

µg/liter). Volunteers used the water purification devices described

above for up to 32 months. After the discovery of this iodine

overload, all iodine-based filters in Niger were discontinued... "

no I am not. I have half a thyroid gland. I just figure I will take 50mg until I am filled up with it and then decrease. Right now I seem to need it. When I take less than 50mg I have poor balance and mental symptoms--mood/anxiety.
